Hi,

I am new to the forum so i am hoping i could get some advice. I own a 2002 Range Rover HSE Diesel. I have covered about 113,000 miles and it has been trouble free up until a week ago. I noticed on a recent trip to Devon that it started to hunt for gears and seemed to judder slightly at around the 40mph- 45mph mark, there was also a slight decrease in power.

Pull away, motorway speed cruising and changing up through the box didnt seem to be effected. it was evident whilst driving around the country lanes going up inclines mainly The gear box hasnt emitted any nasty noises either. I took the car to my local garage and they informed me that the gearbox was on its way out as this was a known problem on my model and year. They also gave me the good news that i would have to more than likely replace the whole unit at considerable cost (£4000.00).

They said they had run a diagnostic check and the car had not registered any errors. I asked if the problem was electronic i.e. sensors or was it purely mechanical.

Could anyone please offer any advice on this.

Many autobox problems are sorted by chaniging the fluid & filter (blocked/partially blocked filter screen) & thats what the manuals suggest. BUT if you have a look at Ashcrofts Ashcroft Transmissions you'll see that they are in 2 minds about doing them on a service basis as they say that they see a lot of problems after a fluid change. They think its down to the new fluid stirring up all the **** in the box.
But if yours is playing up anyway then what have you got to lose?
Give them a ring & see what they say - could also get them to give you a quote.
 
I'd be staying away from your local garage too, they obviously know diddly squat. The ZF auto box in the Rangie is used on countless other cars and has successfully been used in the Rangie since 1986 - known problem my arse...
