Lord knows how, but I have broken it.

It came off ok, no trouble or damage I can recall at the time and was simply changing the ATF.
It was cleanish, although had a little sludge and stuff attached to the magnet. Nothing to worry about I thought.
the drained ATF was still reddish and looked/smelt ok.
Every on the whole has gone to plan but the plug will not go back in the sump.
I turns half a turn then falls out as soon as you put a socket on it.
Looking at it closely the thread looks absolutely knackered. How the hell did that happen? I have not had a chance to cross thread it yet, unless it was by the previous change..... I did not do that either. Where are the missing threads? surely not still in the sump plug hole I hope..... Seems totally clean.

Confused.......

I don't recall a magnet in the sump plug on my auto, the magnets were actually in the sump? You sure it's the correct plug as the sump thread looks good?
You ought to do the filter at the same time as the oil.

The tread in the sump looks fine as you say.

The plug itself is magnetic, no separate magnets in the sump.

The plug does look odd though. I am 99.999999999% positive this is the plug that came out. I have not removed any others  Hmmmmmm.

Maybe order a new one in case.

Oh and filter was done too.

Should be a hex socket head (or was it torx) Maybe they are different depending on year.

This one is a hex head. Looking at it through magnifier it looks like the first couple of turns on the thread have literally snapped off. I wonder if there is anything left in the sump hole. Going to check.

Mystery solved.

The photo of the plug is not the whole plug. I found this in the sump when looking down from inside/above. Managed to twist it out.

How the hell did that happen? Over tightening on last change or metal fatigue?

Hmmmmmm. New one on order anyway, should be here Friday.

Cheers

I can't be sure from the photo, but it looks like a bodge with a helicoil.

Ah, I see what you mean. It could be.......

Fingers crossed the new one will fit on Friday.

Does look a bit like helicoil but I don't think it is. Bloody hope not. Seems like the last few threads around the magnetic rod have sheared off the plug. Should be ok with a new one.

If new plug isn't magnetic remember to put a magnet in bottom of sump, the one from old plug would do

New plug, all seems ok despite a little tight screwing in. Probably from minor thread damage in the sump I suspect. Probably needs a thread chaser but it certainly seems ok enough.

Pic shows the damage on the original.
