P38A Auto gearbox problem

Just been parked on a hill in reverse with my foot on the brake waiting for someone. Put it on drive drove down the hill and noticed that the gears weren't changing smoothly turned along the flat had to wait for someone to park then I had no drive at all. Checked the oil & it was well up on the stick (engine off). Left out a few moments then I had drive again, although I could hear wurring noise & it was reluctant to go into top gear. I drove about 1/4 mile only for it to happen again. Any ideas guys?

What colour is the fluid?

Gearbox oil should be checked, cold, engine running and in Neutral.

looks like the normal colour for atf. Not gout to touch either, if fact cold.

Did you see my post above?

Fluid level should be checked with engine running, cold and in Neutral.

Hello, yes I have had the old girl about 4 years now & I keep my eye on the fluids.
I don't think that it is a fluid level problem.

I ask as your message (as above) indicates you haven't checked the fluid level correctly.

I agree, even with engine running, hot fluid will always show a much higher level on the dipstick. Dipsticks of old used to have hot and cold check marks on them.

Right, I have checked it engine running in neutral cold, & it was low, I put 500cc in & it is about 10/20mm above the top mark.
Took it for a spin, it changes up kicks down and performs as it should. But the wirring sound is still there when you floor out up or when you rev it up when stranding. Any ideas what it is, we think that it is definitely coming from the gearbox. The car has done 160k 2.5D.

Ok, would that make noise when stationary? I have resorted to my old faithful Defender to get me across the channel, I will check out when I return to Blighty.

For the little its going to cost you, change the g/b filters and put new oil in it.... to the correct level

No....if it does it when stationary I'd be looking at the flex plate and torque converter, as these things spin while stationary....the gearbox is still when stopped - as the torque converter is the 'clutch' and one half of the innards would be still and the other half attached to the engine will still be spinning. Unless in Neutral and foot of the brake, then I think a few of the shafts and pump in the gearbox are spinning....

Could be worth trying some of that Lucas transmission fix too.

That's what my mechanic said, that Tyne bolts may have confer loose as they are very short. We have had one of our jumpers torque plate shear the bolts when they wanged it into reverse to stop!
