Auto Gearbox Flashing Green Lights

Hi everyone, seasons greetings to you all!

I have a 2004 Disco 2 TD5 auto. Recently, I had the two green dashboard lights flashing and no red lights on the gear selector console. I used Hawkeye to diagnose, and it reported the fault: 14 P0705 - Position Switch Monitoring.

I checked the ECU for oil in connection cables - all clean. I then replaced the XY Switch. This solved the problem for a very short period of time.

Now, the flashing lights are back - same fault. After a more careful inspection, I have found another sensor(?) on the gearbox further back and up from the XY Switch (it is almost impossible to get at without dropping the gearbox down a little). Waggling the wires for this sensor(?) brings on the red lights on the gear selector console, and once the engine is started clears the flashing green lights, but soon the fault returns.

So, I am now suspecting this sensor(?) or the wiring harness. However, I cannot find any reference to this sensor(?) in the documentation I have or online.

Please, if anyone can help me with more information/advice, I would be grateful. I (and the vehicle) are in Malawi - southeastern Africa. Many thanks.

Hi, the common issue for this symptom once the XYZ switch was ruled out is chafed wiring at the P clip which keeps the harness to the box, there is no sensor between the switch and selector assy which can trigger that fault code, i can't imagine what you saw there

I suspected the wiring early on. The sensor item(?) I was referring to has a plug on it from the same harness as the XY switch - just go back from the XY switch and up; the harness attaches to the gearbox and there is some sensor(?) thing there... I have an image, but I can't upload it :-(

So, I should try and get at the wiring harness and check it for chaffing.

Really appreciate the guidance.

That picture is too small to be clear but seems the connection to the gearbox harness, the output shaft speed sensor is in that area but these would not trigger the 0705 fault code and have nothing to do with the selector lights

Indeed, it is a chafed harness. The P clip is located near the top and at the rear of the transfer box - difficult to fully get to, but do-able. This issue seems to have caused (and now solved) a few other niggling electrical issues.
