Freelander 1 auto gear selector problems

My 2006 freelander has an electrical problem I think .no gear numbers show on dash at all either in auto or in sports mode the little red light by the gear lever is on in auto but when I put into sports mode the light does not switch from the auto side to the sports mode. the auto side of the gear box seems to drive ok although not sure that it changes right down . If I try to put in sports mode that just stays in auto , played about with it this morning and to my great surprise every thing worked as it should took it for a nice 20 minute drive and all was great only to not reselect again sure it cant be to much wrong no codes come up on friends code reader have checked barrel conectors earth straps

The little sensor board below the gear selector is prone to getting corrosion on the connectors if liquid is spilled on the centre console. Liquid can seep through the gaiter surround, and onto the sensor board. I had this issue last summer, but it was easily solved by cleaning the corrosion off.
