Auto box issues

I've just finished a clutch job on a Defender today, that box complete with ancillaries is no easy job unless you have the proper gear or strong help. There's a lot of dismantling. Personally I thought that price sounded acceptable.
Have you read from the top of the thread? We were talking about presenting an autobox to a bloke and him then taking the bell housing off, changing a seal or two then putting it back together again. No removing of the box or replacement. If that WAS the price for doing the whole job then it would be a good one!

The price I had from the transmission specialist is the entire job, they take the box out do whatever needs doing and refit box, so tbh I don’t think it’s to bad ,

If that is the whole job, I am crying into my beer that I don't live near you as they would deffo get it to do, well done you.
and I'll bear that price in mind when i go to see my guy.
Thanks ever so much for that!:D:D:D

It isn’t done so I’ll wait to see how near the final price is lol, they’re a well known transmission specialist and just from the phone call I felt confident with them , they knew the exact issue and talked me through it, he hold md they’d done quite a lot so hopefully the figure they quoted is pretty much spit on, he said the price is pretty much all labour and vat
Good luck with your quest

Good for you mate!
Can I be really cheeky and ask you to get part numbers so I can get the same and be sure of them fitting and doing the job. Don't worry if you don't feel comfortable with this.;):):)

Based on my own experience - '86 RRC ZF4HP22 auto - it's a PITA & I do have a level concrete surface & the tools incl jack & adapter plate plus an engine crane to make it easier.

Big heavy unbalanced item & the torque converter will fall off if you haven't fixed it into place.
It too is a big & heavy item so if it does start to fall DON'T get your hand under it to try & cushion its fall. Chances are it will have hit the floor before you know what's happening - mine did.

Had mine off twice, once to do the rear engine crankshaft seal & the second time to sort out various leaks by replacing gaskets & input seal. I did take Clutch A apart to check the friction plates but all was fine. If you do this then THOROUGHLY clean all items to remove the very fine sludge before reassembly as this is what gums up the governor.
I got the parts from these. Click on your gearbox for a blown up pic. Very helpful, take phone orders with card payment & fast delivery.

Thanks for this mate!:):):)

When you look at the pics of the ZF4HP22/24 you need to (mentally if looking at the screen) put the first one (Page 1) to the left of the second (Page 2). The arrows showing what goes where then make sense.

Thanks again for all this. I have a 2000 TD5 Discovery so need to ensure I get the right gearbox type before going too much further with this, but thanks to all those who are helping me out on this forum I am sure I will get there in the end.
Trouble is it is impossible to socially distance when you are both holding bits of the same gearbox!
But it won't go on for ever!
