Really looking for some advise in a desperate situation, I have a td5 auto which failed its mot on major oil leak from the transmission, I booked the car in with a specialist to have a look at, he’s just phoned me to say he’s removed the inspection cover on the bellhousing and it’s dry, he said it was coming from the gasket between the box and the bellhousing , he informed me this was a full strip down of the box and not something they get involved with, dilemma time as vehicle is out of mot and quite honestly does not warrant spending thousands on a gearbox rebuild? Is this really the huge job it sounds? A complete gearbox rebuild to do a seal that’s not actually inside the gearbox??
Any advice or recommendations would be great (based Wolverhampton/Telford area )

Mate, I am in exactly the same situation as you except that my MOT station called it an advisory, so I just carried on topping up the gearbox on a regular basis.
I posted a thread about it on here at the time and although you do have to take the box off to replace the gasket, no, you do not have to strip the box and rebuild it.
I have yet to do this but will be doing it before the MOT next year.
I'll see if I can find this thread again and post back on it on this thread.

Thanks for the reply, tbh I remember reading a while ago about a pump seal but wasn’t sure if that was the same kind of issue , I haven’t got the space to be doing a box out job unfortunately and now I’m kind of stuck , it is worrying when a Land Rover specialist tells you it’s a full strip down though

What you will find is, they know exaclty what the job involves, and they do not want to get involved as they have been bitten before, hence the we do not get involved statement/specialist work.

I usd to know a bloke whos garage quoted silly high prices on work they did not want, and if they still got said work they would farm it out!

Right here is the thread and stuff

Mate, I really wish we lived nearer one another then we could do both jobs together, i have all the tools, engine hoist etc, just need a decent flat surface and another pair of hands!
Anyway, hope this is of some help.:):):)

True enough and I understand that totally,

Wouldn’t that be handy, I’m not afraid of getting stuck myself if had the time and space
I have a mate who would help me, my biggest problem is not having a hard standing, but if the worst came to the very worst I would have to put some slabs together or something to get the job done. A Lot depends on whether the LR guy I mentioned in the other thread has the balls to do the job, or would be prepared to let me work on the box once it's off, in his place, while he does other stuff. He'd take it off no sweat, it's the rest.....;):(

That’s the problem having nowhere to work, I trained as an agricultural engineer years ago so not really phased by doing the job, just limited room and being new to land rovers , anyway spoke to a transmission specialist and they’ve have agreed to take on the job, he knew all about it straight away and the price was okay

Lucky old you!
Please do give me the price so I can have a ball-park figure when taking to my bloke, just in case he gets silly, and also can you let me know exactly what you found and had to change?
If you are anything like me you will be p!ssed off at having to give it to someone else to do.
By the way, I know Telford a bit as I am godfather to a pair of young lads of Sicilian origin who live there. Don't get to see them often enough. Sons of an ex-colleague of mine. :(

couple of 8x4 ply sheets
Cheers James! I have a few slabs i could prolly use but if ply will do it....!
Tell me, one thing i have been thinking about, how high do I need to get the Disco off the ground to be able to get the box off? I have two seriously high axle stands and a pair of ramps, but I don't know if it would be better to raise it level or with its ass in the air. I am kind of assuming level.
Also I have a sunroof so wondering if I could sling a big dod of wood across the roof and use that together with a hoist. of which I have a couple, rather than the engine hoist which seems a bit more unwieldy. That would clear the area under the disco which would make it easier for a jack to take the weight of the box when i pull it off.
I am glad I don't have to pay myself by the hour!

Tbh roean in Telford have a very good reputation, used them for parts quite a lot but they’re very busy, the transmission specialist I found have quoted £490 including oils

So, you take the box to them, they remove a few bits, change a few seals etc and charge £490!
So I don't know if you are happy with that or being ironic!
Don't know what to say now!

i lift up the drivers side then crane in passenger side

Right, and that gives enough clearance to drop the box on the floor and pull it out from under it, driver's side i assume?
Do you pull it out on a jack or just slide it out on the ground? Sorry to keep asking questions.;)

I've just finished a clutch job on a Defender today, that box complete with ancillaries is no easy job unless you have the proper gear or strong help. There's a lot of dismantling. Personally I thought that price sounded acceptable.
