Does it flash F4 on the dash to say it's in limp mode?

Have you had any recent work done on it before this fault started?

Yes it will flash F4 in limp home mode unless the data link to the display is missing?
Although I don't thing that selecting 1st will engage 1st in limp mode?

When mine went into limp mode, after selecting drive it tried 1st then went to 4th. I assume it depends on the fault and whats a available. Dun't half shock ya when it happens. Barrel connectors came loose.

Hi Guys,
No F4 or anything showing anywhere?? And yes TD4 engine.

There are two things recently that have been done to the car, two weeks before this autobox problem the fuel pump went on it ( surprise ) it's had a new pump and I'm told the relevant filters..been fine starting and running since??

Then, with the autobox was the dripping water from the roof arieal through the interior light then straight down onto the gear console onto & into the led's that show the gear position with a red light and the little marker relevant to where the shift lever position is.

I even bought another red LED thing, fleabay/secondhand..but no change, also nothing shows at all on the dash relating to gear stick position anymore.
Engage 1st only ..Fine..engage reverse only..Fine..engage 2.. and drive and it's just like it's starting off in third and stays there, won't shift up or down. The 'sport' mode gimmick doesn't work at all either..???

Thanks,
Dave

As Hippo said, check the 2 barrel connectors on top of the gearbox. If that doesn't fix it then it's best to get the ECU read to identify the fault. Is the engine MIL on?

Hi Nodge,
OK thank you, is it easy to get at these barrel connectors??from underneath or top through gear shift console?? I without trying to sound even thicker ..MIL..??? I assume a light on the dashboard?? No nothing showing, miles & trip yes, no gear position, no engine management light or anything.....
Thanks,

Dave

The barrel connectors are in the engine bay above the gearbox. You can't miss them. Take a look at post 3 of the link. This is what they look like minus the hose clips and zip ties!! ( I hope you don't mind Hippo?) http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f9/auto-gearbox-problem-2-5-v6-209987.html
The MIL is the engine light ;)

You see, this forum has some very very nice people on it!
Thanks Nodge68, I had seen the picture but was struggling to work out exactly where the connectors were.
I also struggle with aches & pains these days too, especially today ??? but I shall endeavour to have a 'firkle' about with these wires...either later or in the morning.
It's a process of elimination I guess really, and everyone here has been sooo helpful.
I'll let you know!

Thanks again,
Dave

Sorry to have left my replies so long to this post.....
However...SORTED now.

I, as suggested, attempted to take apart, clean out, re connect etc all wires that are in those two big blocks, followed every wire I could that may have even remotely related, or not,...no joy. Both fans were running when ignition was on?????????????

Beaten,..so, not sure if I'm allowed to mention names here, but let's just say I took the car to Ashley in Stafford.
Plugged in the laptop.....No Communication with AutoBox...so, after he tested his laptop on another Auto Freelander..and all was OK,i it was obviously my car & not his laptop.
Bit the bullet, took it in again...phone call 2 1/2 hours later..Done It!!

To cut a long story short..after initially checking for continuity between 'some' of the plug in points, computer said 'check fuse No. 4???? remember the fans were running???? fuse No. 4 relates to the fan/fans...blown!!! Fans still running though??? changed fuse..all OK!!!!! Wether somehow the radiator fan had 'stopped' possibly through water from our lanes floods had briefly caused this, and I mean deep flood, I'll never know, but the fans stopped after he'd changed the fuse, dash lights/console light/reversing lights all came back on..gear indicator on the dash re emerged..I assume then a 're-check' & continued with the laptops fault diagnostic route taken.....but all working perfectly as it was originally...??????? I can only guess that the computer had detected that cooling wasn't sufficient..maybe relating to autobox oil temperature as well???? No Idea in reality, but all I can say is that 'Fuse No. 4' was the culprit, and the car is perfect now and running at normal temperature....I know watch out in floods/avoid any!!!!!!

that will happen if the engin is not cooled enough i had it on my old one when the water pipe to the oil cooler burst the first thing i knew was ity was selecting gears funny it pays to keep a eye on your tempature

Thanks for that TW1..yes, somehow....there is a connection to the engines overall operating temperature I guess..I very rarely drive the Freelander, 'er indoors' I 'rely' on to tell me of any problems..but I'm certain there's been no indication of the guage on the dash warning of any rise..I'm guessing it was something to do with the fans????

I wish I could simply transplant a 200TDi into the Freelander though!
