auto-box banging

Hi there i have td4 auto 2002 110.000 miles full service history,
My problem being when box changes from 3rd to 4th it jurks and bangs every time 4th to 5th is smooth, there's no kick down at all and it will hold gears for a long time before changing , i have had the oil changed recently but garage said that the oil that came out was clean but there was signs of work been done on box as sealant was all over the end plate, i have a spare gearbox to replace if needed how big is the job and whats the pit falls anyway you lot now more than me advice please cheers ,,Lee

Hello.
Did a thread on here about faulty auto box. Resurrected it the other day so it won't be too far down the list.
Basically it's your solenoid body. Take it to a gear box specialist, unless your a competent mechanic.
Will cost a few quid though.

There you go.
If you're going to replace it with the one you have, my only advice would be,
The reverse gear nut is next to the oil change nut!!! Be very careful which one you undo.

Cheers Mike can that be changed with box still in could i swap it from my spare one ,, also forgot to say that the box is making what i can only describe as a grinding noise or scraping noise, i put gearbox treatment in last Thursday and noise and kick down improved but now its back to as it was, Lee

I believe it's box off job, unless someone's found another way of doing it.
From what you've said, it's probably best to swap them over. That one that's on sound fooked.

Before talking about solenoids and valve body, how is the change to reverse?

and how is the change from 5 to 4, 4 to 3, 3 to 2 ?

There's a specific way to change the Freelander 1 auto oil. Make sure you follow the correct method to set the oil level correctly. It's on ere.
