Hi all,

I'm a member of a UK MRT looking for some new AT tyres for our vehicles (Hilux and Defender 110)
They're both currently running BFG KO2, happy with the off road performance and durability but would like better on road performance in both wet and dry.

They mainly spend most of their life on country roads but they get driven hard (blue light emergency response vehicles) and have to do some light off roading (dirt tracks, wet & muddy fields with few rocks in) but no serious rock crawling. Reasonable snow/winter performance would be a bonus, but we use chains if conditions get too bad.
We don't care about 'aggressive sidewall/tread look' so interested in performance only.

We can get good deals on the following so only considering these:
Toyo Open Country AT Plus
Falken Wildpeak AT3WA
BFG KO2

Does anyone have experience with the above tyres?
Will any of these give us better dry/wet grip without sacrificing too much off road performance and durability?

Thanks in advance!

I have the Toyo tyre on my Disco, and they are civilised on road. I fitted them in place of some rather tired old Insa Turbo Dakar tyres and immediately gained 3mpg! Faster and much quieter on the road too. They're not a dedicated winter tyre but look to have enough siping/flexibility to be reasonable. They appear to be a similar tread design to that fitted to the later Defender.

Surely there is no real discussion here.

You have 2 vehicles and 3 options. 1 option you currently have and don't like. So fit a set of Toyo to one vehicle and Falken to the other.

2 completely different vehicles with different weight distribution characteristics.

The Hilux has lockable diffs and is, primarily, a rear wheel drive vehicle with 4WD capability.
The 110 (you haven't said what model but I will presume a TD5/PUMA version), is a part-time 4WD vehicle with a center locking differential only.

As such the Hilux will cope with slightly less aggressive tyres than the 110 both on and off road.
Being a RWD truck, to stop its back end swinging out it will need a smoother, more grippy tyre than the 110.
The Goodyear Wrangler HP All Weather would be my choice on the Hilux with Goodyear Wrangler MT/R M+S on the 110.

Compromising (as you are "We can get good deals on the following so only considering these:") isn't a good idea IMHO.
As a Mountain Rescue Team member I would put performance above the slight increase in cost.

I own a D90 and a Mk8 Hilux which I drive on and off road using the Hilux for longer/motorway distances as well as around country lanes and across muddy snowy fields etc.
There are places I would be more nervous taking the Hilux than the Defender and places I would be more comfortable taking the Hilux. With the tyres I have mentioned above I would confidently take either vehicle to do 'some light off roading (dirt tracks, wet & muddy fields with few rocks in)' in both wet and dry conditions happy in the knowledge that I also will have a 'reasonable snow/winter performance'.

Thanks for your detailed reply.
Wrong wording on the post there - the tyres listed are the only one's we can get from reputable retailers in the correct size (Hilux - LT225/75R16).
As you said Hilux is RWD with selectable 4WD and has a button to lock diff.
Also would agree that the Hilux seems to require more grippy tyres on road as have experienced the back momentarily swing out when cornering!

Also have found a couple more suitable tyres for the Hilux so shortlist stands as:
BFG KO2
Toyo Open Country AT Plus
Falken Wildpeak AT3WA
General Grabber AT3
Kumho Road Venture AT52 (cheaper/less known brand?)
Davanti Terratoura (cheaper/less known brand?)
Triangle AgileX AT TR292 (keen to stay away from Chinese brands)

Thanks again all for comments.

I’ve got AT3 on my pickup at the moment. Excellent tyre and not noisy either. I’d definitely recommend those. They aren’t quite as bullish as BG but they have been fine for me in the mud and

seen the conti cross contacts? best without question on wet leafy roads
but they not cheap else stc with the bfg's the others dont come close on the road!
I have similr needs and fitted BFG KO2 Commericals 6 months ago, superb in the wet compared to others.

I've got Falken Wildpeak AT3WA on my l322 ffrr but it's nothing like either of your cars.

No issues with them at all so far but 100% on road. I was very impressed with them on snow last winter

Yokohama Geolander AT 015 are a good all round tyre, which perform well on wet and dry tarmac, and do ok off road too, and they're 3 peeks rated.
