Hi Landyzone people.

Sunday is going to be a big day! We have found a series 1 landrover at the back of a shed. It was driven in 20 years ago and left.

Sunday is the day we plan to move. Is there anything we should be mindful of? Does and donts ? Type of oil we should use or anything we should drain or fill ?

Clearly we dont want to damage it. We are hoping that she rolls and the engine is not ceased.

I opened the fuel cap and surprised that it had such a strong smell of fuel after all those years.

The aim is to get her running again :)

What a find! Depends what engine is in it, if it's one one the earlier ones i would take the time and effort to trailer it so you can give a good going over before you try to start it

All I know it's a petrol engine and its original to the vehicle. It's an A reg if that helps. This is all new to me.

One person told me to just to it and get everything loose before we start it.

The really cool thing is I learnt to drive it in a while ago so really excited about trying to get her going again
 
Ah that's different of you know some history! If be tempted to just give it an oil and fuel change, bung a bit of oil down the bores and turn it over a few times with the handle them go for start!
 
That's what I am hoping. It will be ironic as my puma has not started for 4 months.


Foes anyone know what sort of oil is needed ? I have been looking online but not really coming up with much.

As soon as she is out from the shed I will get some photos. She does need a bit of love but should be good.

Pull the spark plugs out and put 10cc of oil in the bores and leave over night, turn engine by hand on cranking handle and not starter for the first few turns without spark plugs in so that everything can move freely.

Drain the oil out of it and pour a litre of diesel in the top in a hurry and let it run out the bottom, once that has drained out pop some fresh oil in and see how it goes.

Most likely the brakes will be seized and need freed off, if you can jack the wheels in turn and spin them if possible to lube the bearings.

It uses a 10/40 classic mineral oil

When you pull the spark plugs out, note the number on them and get a new set, get a new set of leads, distributor cap and rotor arm, a set of points and a new coil too, don't worry about a battery as these will start on the handle quite easily.

I know it sounds a lot but there is no point trying to start it without having new components handy as standing for 20yrs will see at least the points stuck and or the coil degraded, at the very least pop the cap off and clean up the contacts and rotor arm with emery cloth.
 
Thank you, that's a great shout. As it's so old where is a good place to look to get replacements? I doubt euro car parts are able to help ? o_O

Mansfield Motors in Manningtree (think they are still there, although minus Duncan Mansfield) they will be able to source everything for you, if you get the VIN number off it and give them a call they can arrange everything for you to pick up or post to you should you so desire.
