Going getting a pair of lockers for my 110 and not sure if I'll get air lockers or limited slip/atb type.

already have a detroit tru-trac to fit to the front that was in my old 110 so could just fit that and ashcroft locker for the back or a detroit locker for the rear with a Salisbury axle...

Or just get a pair of air lockers? Will have on board air anyway.

Defender is used as a daily, towing and greenlaning to mild offroading.

This is a question I have often asked myself. I will be watching this thread with interest. I would be looking for something which is cost effective and reliable. I often go off in the snow here on my own and I would want something that would get me out of this below.

For me it'd be two Ashcrofts, I like the control of having difflock on or off.

However, as you already have a Tru-Trac then it makes sense to use that in the front and an Ashcroft in the rear. With the cost savings, use it to maybe upgrade your rear half-shafts to HD to suit, or maybe a winch, rope or recovery kit, maybe upgrade air intake stuff, that sort of thing.

I quite like the idea of having the Ashcroft rear LSD/ATB, with the TC on my TD5 should give some excellent traction for £600 instead double that for a locker set up.

I shall watch with interest

Do mean your preference two ashcrofts as in air lockers?

And then trutrac in the front and ashcroft locker or atb in the rear. If going air locker in the rear, I'd sell the front trutrac and get an air locker for the front too as it's the front that is more useful to be able to completely unlock.

It really does make sense to just get a ashcroft atb for the rear and leave the trutrac be in my spare axle and fit the whole lot.

As for using the saving in other upgrades...

Already have a winch
Already have a snorkel
Already have a TD5 that's pretty much as far as you can go without a 2.7 stroker... Although it's already 2.6 :D

Might get some HD shafts though. Never broke one yet in 50-60k of driving on 33s and 35s but with lockers front and rear, they might act up

Yep, ashcroft atbs with traction control would be ideal but I'll make do with left foot braking when I get cross axled :)

Been reading up more on the detroit locker and many say it's abit of a pain for daily driving and can be abit sketchy in the ice and snow although something a little tail Happy wouldn't bother me as used to it with my M3 and drift cars

Also its suppose to be abit clunky so think I've narrowed it down to atbs or air lockers now

detroit no problem as a daily driver, and in snow, icy, rain slicked roads they are wonderful, As most all american pivkups and full size SUV's have them from factory as OEM. I got 240k miles on mine and are wonderful and when you need the extra traction they are nice. Nothing nice than driving in 8-12 inches of snow and see all those cars sitting and spinning there tyres and getting no wear fast. Just put it high 4x4 wheel lock and off you go:)

Detroit locker worth the extra effort in changing from a later Rover type to Salisbury axle on my 110 though?

Friend has a Detroit locker in stock and I think I can get a Salisbury axle handy too that I could fit rather than having to order a ATB diff.

Sorry yes, Ashcroft Airlockers.

I like the idea of the Ashcroft LSD in the rear, but whilst I haven't used one, my preference is because I know an air locker in the rear 'works' when I want it to .. ;) (Mine's an old ARB)

I like my Ashcroft limited slips. In fact I liked them so much I got one for the centre diff as well. Fit and forget. You notice the difference on surfaces where you've got a slippery film of manure, ice or mud, and they're a big help on wet grass slopes.
This guy seems to like them too:

a very good write up. And that is basically how our american pickups/full size suv work. Back in the 70's-80's our 4x4's were like your landrover with a full time 4x4 and what a pain. you needed lock out front hubs to make your front drive last. Warn made tons of $$ during that time.

Yes, I'm very pleased with the limited slips. The Ashcroft units look very nicely made for the money - nicer than the Land Rover ones - and if you do a lot of ordinary road driving between adventures on the slippery stuff they're around the best transmission upgrade you can do for a few hundred pounds. Nobody on the internet is saying that they've broken them yet either. Unlike Quaifes which used to be the Rolls Royce of limited slip diffs with a price to match, where lots of people are now complaining about them. Probably more so than in the US, there is a lot of wet grass in this country and even more wet grass in Wales. So I like anything that works better on wet grass.

Still listed on Ashcrofts site as well "zero failures to date" whether that is true or not, it does mean no one has ever taken one back.

For £600 fitted into a casing + new bearing not a bad cost at all. FAR cheaper and considerably easier than full lockers.

Yep, I'm swaying towards ashcroft atb the more I read up on them.

I'll probably change my current front trutrac to a ashcroft down the line too to be honest and sell it on as I bought it built out of a Tomcat and there's a very slight whine in it.

Ill stick it in for a year or so and then build the axle that's coming off the 110 to fit it with upgrades shafts, cvs etc
