Hi all.
I'm soon to be acquiring a swb series 3 with no engine, gear box or axles and I've got a plan in my head of what I want to do. I've got a disco 200tdi sat about and a 110 gear box along with a 109 x-mod salisbury rear axle and a pink panther front axle casing.
The plan I've got in my head is to fit a 110 front grill panel with the 200tdi rad and intercooler, the disco 200tdi with the 110 gear box with the Ashcroft 5 Speed Kit but instead of moving the standard gearbox x-member back I want to keep it where it is and move the engine forward there for using the space the fitting the defender front grill panel gives and saves having to modify the hand brake linkages and keeping the standard props if I wasn't planing on fitting the Salisbury but would put the defender gear stick almost in the bulk head so I though of using a Disco gear stick unit but from memory this would put it to far back. But as I said this is only in my head and from memory so I may be wrong so any help or input would be great.

That's a nice collection of kit, should make a good landy. Best plan I reckon is get all the bits together and mock it up on the chassis with the bulkhead and whatnot so you can see where everythings going to go. Might be easier with defender bits if its going to look like that at the front anyway.

Lt77 200tdi box should find a buyer easily enough if its in good condition :)

Ok I'm using a disco V8 box but modding it to fender spec on a long bellhousing so it'll be in a good position

But importantly I keep the series front end

Ok thanks for the input but the reason I want to do the 110 gear box is strength. I know of people that have have put a 200tdi up to a standard series gear box and they haven't lasted. My father being one of those people and to be honest this landy is not going to be getting an easy life. So that's why I'm going for the 110 gear box and its a 110 gear box not a defender gear box.

I know what your saying about the defender front but what I really want to do is stage 1 look (it was easier to put defender rather than stage 1) which I think looks better than the plastic series 3 grill.

It is a great Idea to mock it all up on a bear chassis but the landy is mostly complete. It's just missing the engine, gear box and axles. To be honest I think it's still got an MOT and I've been restoring a series 2a for the last 2 years which I've just found out I can't insure that's why I'm getting this series 3 so I don't want to mess about striping back to nothing as I just want to get my self on the road in a landy ASAP.

a 110 box so an Lt95 ?

I may be able to get a 200tdi LT77 available if you want ? Need to ask but someone I know is selling one, gear lever will still be the same position though AFAIK

Cant see why you can insure a series 3 but not a 2a tbh, if you want a fender get a fender, if you want a stage one get a stage one but IMO no point modding it as they don't look right

I don't think it's a LT95 gear box but am not sure. The box came out of a C reg 2.5 NA 110. Yea I had heard about the reverse gear. Something to do with it being on a bush not a bearing so can pick up if it gets too hot/over used.

I would love a stage 1 but there's the slight issue of the price of buying it, the price of running it and the price of parts and I'm always on the look out for a defender but with the price of them at the moment that's not looking promising either.

And just add I'm using/want to use the kit to put a series transfer box on to a defender gear box if any one is getting confused??? ---> Ashcroft Transmissions - Series 5 speed kits

that reverse gear issue was on series boxes ,but saying hat teeth wear out before bush does ,the reverse on early lt77 doesnt enter mesh fully some more or less so than others ,consquently rev gear teeth get damaged till it wont hold in gear ,are you using free wheeling hub kit in lt230 center diff or using kit to fit series t/box on to lt77

Series transfer box on to LT77 is the plan I've got in my head.
I know some one that has got a SWB series with a disco 200tdi with a defender LT77 gear box and transfer box with disco axles fitted with leaf springs and the rear prop is incredibly short. Its a gear truck. The breaks are great, the gear box is great (apart from its reving it's head off at 60mph because its a early 1:6 ratio and its on 6.00 16's to get the wheels set in as far as posable) and the engine is great but I wouldn't want to use it off road for the sake of that rear prop.

Mines going to be like that but with custom wide props from the local place, props going to be about the length as the front one I'd think but should be ok

if you have a fender lt77 that should still be the same size or close so no need to move and if you're using the series x'fer should be fine or converting the lt230 to 2x4 and 4x4 mode in difflock ?

the more you keep it original the less work is needed, if not you'll end up in the same boat as me modifying crossmembers and bulkhead size to fit
