Hello,

Just a quick thought I've had after reading a website about land rover restoration. Was asbestos used in the manufacturing of older land rovers? I can honestly say that I don't know what uses the stuff had besides garage roof panels, and I'm curious as to whether it could have found its way into a 1986 land rover 90?

Am I being stupid?

Not just old Land Rovers, all cars required 'Brake Pads or Shoes, Clutches'.........HSE as it was in those days advised not to use air lines to blow out dust during servicing, which many ignored anyway.
Early heat insulation wrapping for exhausts also had an asbestos content for obvious reasons.

Alright cheers. I was just thinking along the lines of it being used inside and shaking to bits and getting into my lungs etc.

Cheers anyways!

the only way your going to be effected by asbestos is to grind it up and stand there with a straw and snort it up...

i think its rediculous that company's now specialise in this as a remediation to contaminated land issues. as long as your not eating the stuff you will be all right. asbestos is in loads of household and industrial products, many of which are still around today. ow, and you wont notice the effects for around 40years.

besides the danagers asbestoes is a brilliant material, it is heat, fire, sound proof, ridgid, stong and relatively easy to mold, however as soon as it become dust itmight just as well be anthrax

think lining in bulkhead, door panel, engine bay, headliner, truck bed liner

I'll pass your thoughts on to me old man. I'm sure he'll die laughing if his asbestosis doesn't do the job first. He was a thermal insulator (pipe lagger) for 40 years. when he first started the job they used an asbestos based cement mix to cover the pipes I don't think he actually ate the stuff but he did inhale lots of dust and fibres in the course of his work.

You only need to breathe in one good breathfull and you stand a chance of developing asbestosis. bit of a lottery really. I do agree though that as long as it isn't disturbed, cut or abraded. it's pretty safe. In fact I fitted a new bathroom out in a block of 70's flats last week and had to take the boxwork off the wastepipes. They'd used asbestos board as sound deadening under the wood work. I just left it alone and replaced the wood work when i'd finished.
