Are these discs directional?

There not for aiding cooling there for letting the gasses and dust out when the brakes get realy hot as in motorsport applications, why any one would feel the need to fit grooved dics on a landy is beyond me, unles you intend doing track days init :eek:.
 
Right, I've just come across this photo of the same discs as mine, it's a photo of the rear disc but is it the near side or offside? And are the discs the correct way around?

I think thats the off side (Drivers), so the vehicle would be heading off to the right of the photo if it drove off. If thats correct, then I would say the disc is on the wrong way round, because the groves are leaning forward, not back, so sh1te will be directed toward the hub centre, bot away.

so what replaces the hot gasses that are let out then ? would it be cooler air than is let out thus cooling the brakes, or have I got it wrong and nothing replaces it and it creates a vacuum ?

cooler air, keep pads clean etc ,slotted are better for heavy vehicles as well as fast vehicles ,whilst maybe not vital performance parts to aid braking

No its replaced with mud which sets solid thereby giving you solid discs like the cheaper ones:)
 
Right, looking at the location of the calliper in this photo, it must be the rear offside disc, which would turn clockwise. So I would have thought that the slots should be pointing the other way. In which case that particular disc should be on the near side. Anyone agree/disagree?

Nothing replaces it, when pads get realy hot they produce gas/dust this can stop the pad making contact with the disc the cross drilling and slots allows the gas to escape.

Cross drilling obviously works a lot better on vented discs as the gasses and dust can escape through the disc, infact they tend to block up on solid discs.

The slots also scrape the pads keeping them clean.

Slotted discs can be quite noisey as well but probably not an issue on a landy :D
