Are Sump Guards worth it?

Hi Guys,

I am considering installing the standard LR sump guard to the front of my TD5. Although i am starting to have second thoughts. Here's my questions:

1 - Do these affect the oil cooling of the sump?

2 - Are these guards worth having? I mean, how many of us have damage that would have been prevented by a guard?

3 - Are they easy to install by a diy mechanic? Trying to keep the costs to around £200. It will take land rover 2 hours to fit, and apparantly part of the suspension needs to be rebolted.

Thanks for any help,
Andy

I've got limited mechanical skill and managed to remove rusty bolts, clean up the area, paint bits and fit a guard in less than 2 hours. In the rain. In the street.

Do the landy folk have a wee lie down during it's fitting?

I take it you mean a steering guard plate thing.

If so I was offroading and took a ditch at the base of a hill enthusiastically. Had I not had the guard I would definately have knacked my steering and possibly other bits.

craddocks have them for £60 + an hours DIY

Ive recently fitted a steering guard, bog standard, 5mm galvanised steel. The only nause I had was to free up the original mounting bolt from steering drop arm and chassis. Dont think it had been removed in its entire life.

In terms of negative affect to sump cooling I think its negliable.

I have an ally one with 4 big holes in. took 20 minutes to fit and looks good. I havent hit anything with it so cant say if it has a practical purpose. cost 60quid...its your money, spend it on yalandy!

it might be cos its late n i get grumpy this time of night but why do people keep spending money on fitting things that "look" good

harks back to the corsa boys conversation and their red brakes, or the disco owner whod spent 25K on things that look good and sorta sulked when he got told the vehicle was only worth 2k inc the addons

There's a newish 90 round here that's got it all, snorkel, winch, chequer plate everywhere, fat wheels etc but it's painted gloss black and the paint is pristine so I'm guessing it's never even been on his lawn. If I park next to him in my 110 with the same kit but also dents, scrapes and muck all up the sides he always looks a bit embarrased:D

I fitted my steering guard (Mantec one and boy is it chunky!), and then managed to get a s@dding tree stump to travel down between the steering guard and the tyre and ding my track-rod.. Must have had a good 5mm clearance either side

Hence I also now have a Sumo bar replacement for the track rod. Might be worth looking at either a Sumo bar or Dan Bar as well just for a bit of extra protection.
