Are remoulds any good?

Just watched a rather interesting video on youtube showing how remould tyres are created, the obvious benefit is cost savings but are remoulds any good?
would you use remould tyres and are there any down sides to this?

i.e reduced life etc.
 
Used them for years and never had an issue.. Insa Special Track are very popular on here.. me new motor has Good Year Wranglers on it so I'll see how they last by comparison..
 
Insa turbo tyres are used by lots of members on here, they seem to have a good reputation although I haven't used them myself. The last remoulds I had were Kingpin SAT's on a diesel S111 they seemed ok but tyre shredding performance is not a diesel S111 strong point.

I found that you can buy an off road remould for around £50 which seemed reasonable
 
Most of the worlds airliners land on remoulds - nuff said.

Seriously tho'. Remould quality is far better than it used to be. Depends what you want them for. Wouldn't put them on a new RR or Disco but a Series or old RRC or Disco that struggles to hit 70 should be fine.
 
I've only ever used Insa Turbo Ranger , I find them good & cheap. As mentioned they are bastards to balance but not your problem.
 
I had a set of Insa Turbo Sahara's and couldn't fault them
Remoulds are now manufactured to tight standards so the tales of woe from the 70s no longer apply.
As with any tyre look at the age of it when you buy it, I was recently offered a set of New Tyres that haven't been made for 10 years so may well be perished but looking fine till you fit them and load them up
 
Insa Sahara Dakars, not had any problems with them, on or off road.

As posted before, they are fine on a series, 90/110, early Defender or Disco I wouldn't use them on anything with serious (ie 90mph plus) performance.
 
although i have not tried it yet i doubt my new disco 200tdi would go much above 70

Remould tyres have to meet certain safety standards,it is re treaded tyres that are no good.With a remoulded tyres it basicaly is new tread that is heat moulded like a new tyre but uses a used casing,a re tread is just and old casing and a tread stuck on.Or used to be,not sure if they still make them anymore.

What is a retreaded tyre?
A retreaded tyre – also known as a remould – is made from a used tyre. Old tyres which are not sound should never be used as components for retread tyres. The essential building block for a retreaded tyre is a used tyre whose tread is worn-out but whose carcass (basic structure) is sound. Retreading involves stripping away both the remaining tread and sidewall of the used tyre. The final part of the process moulds new rubber to the old carcass.
What standards govern the production of retreaded tyres?
In the past, retread tyres have been manufactured in accordance with BS AU 44e. However, this standard did not specify a type approval test for retreaded tyres, which would guarantee a standard tyre quality.
On 1st January in 2004, ECE Regulations 108 and 109 came into effect, making it mandatory for retreaded tyres to be subject to a type approval test. This ensures that retread manufacturers must meet a specified basic standard in terms of the tyres’ suitability for retreading prior to the process, and their performance after it. It is now illegal to sell retreaded tyres that that do not have the “e” mark.
Are there any problems with retreaded tyres?
In the majority of cases, retreaded tyres perform satisfactorily provided the manufacturer’s guidance about maximum vehicle loadings and maximum speeds is followed. Like all tyres; overloading, sustained high speeds, and under or over-inflation all contribute to increased tyre wear and/or premature failure.
Never buy a retreaded tyre without the "e" mark.
 
Most of the big commercial companies seem to use them on the big trucks. I see them on drive axles and trailers but rarely on the steering. I don't know if that means anything.
I'd imagine they'd be ideal on a Landy, especially if you're off roading and as likely to wreck a tyre as wear it out.

This....

the old 70s used to be retreads, not sure if they do retreads for passenger/lgv thesedays, they still do them for hgv, you still occasionally see the odd tread thats come adrift on the side of the motorway. oh, and apparently they do them for planes too :)
 
Just purchased some kingpin amazons 265/75/16 need fitting to my wheels as yet, apparently there a bit of a sod to balance on alloys.

got them on my disco the fitter had a right game balancing mine so much so he gave up for a fag break half way through
