Yes, the petrol, particularly the 4.6, is way more refined a ride. Just a pity about the head gaskets, the cylinder liners, the valley gasket, the various oil leaks, the throttle body coolant leaks, the hose for the cruise control ...
Touch wood, mines been OK on all those points apart from the cruise not working. I found that the brake pedal switch wasn't working and now I can hear it generating vacuum but it still doesn't work. I guess it's a leak somewhere but haven't had time to find it yet. No worse than replacing leak off pipes every 6 months ;)

I think you mean 6 hours, days or if you are lucky months. Would rather do the leak off pipes rather than h/gaskets;)

Fair comment. I think the diesel is generally a more reliable beast and as I say, nothing against them. I really did want the diesel originally but this one looked a bargain so I took a chance and glad I did. I test drove several diesels and had actually said yes to one but he wouldn't let me pay by PayPal so lost the sale.

Do what I did , buy one of each. Then you can argue with both camps.;):D:D:D

Really glad i got the V8 Thor, did think about buying one with LPG but kept hearing so many stories about heads ect, mind you i should,nt listen to too many people as when i bought my V6 Frontera as an everyday hack for the dogs, people said i was mad but after 7 years of abuse she's still going strong !

Frontera massively underrated car. Think it was based on something Jap, Isuzu?

Basically it is an Isuzu trooper and the V6 came out at 206 bhp, go's like a scolded cat and will do anything Iv asked of it, just don't have any presence like my V8 P.

My leak off pipes have been replaced once in 21 years and are fine.
What were your old one's? Been under the bonnet again today as I was leaving a trail of diesel on the way back from the village, fecking bast+rd. DOES ANYONE KNOW WHERE I CAN GET DECENT LEAK OFF PIPE BEFORE I THRASH THIS CAR WITHIN AN INCH OF IT'S LIFE.:mad::mad::mad::mad:. It's getting the maintence charger tomorrow as I'm of to the sun so feck it, see how it feels being ignored for three weeks.

My old ones disintergrated as soon as I started touching them. The bits were binned!

I personally don't think it will be a classic. The Range Rover classic was a groundbreaker at the time, it was a car that defined Britain and in it you see the brilliant and awful of British design and build quality, it has a stylish look and feel of the 70's and 80's yet manage to be comfortable to drive today. The classic mainly the pre mid 80's are no more difficult to work on than a defender just rust more. Parts are plentiful and it feels British in good and bad ways.
The p38 was a good car at the time but the looks don't do it for me. They look wrong, it looked like a tramp in a suit, appears upmarket but looks quite tacky and not well groomed.

The electrics will turn the keenest of restorers off and they are unfortunately just a car, no soul no character or charm like the land rovers or classics have.

Compare it to the mini. The classic mini is a classic and is like the first generation Range Rover. The p38 is like the bmw mini, shares a name but it's all about profit for the company.

so im now tacky look like a tramp and not well groomed !!!! this from a yokal where they chew straw wear cords 5 sizes too big and think the world stops at Bristol :mad::mad::mad:

well. I truly think the p38 is on the rise.
however this is purchase/selling price.
the price of ownership will still outstrip any vehicle value increase.
have what you want if you can and enjoy
my P38 is so much more reliable now my mate owns it than it ever was when I had it!!!
best wishes.

Wow that is a load of tosh.

Your entire rational is based on the fact you personally don't like the looks.... Really solid argument there... ;)

The Frontera wasn't a Trooper, I think it was an MU. The Vauxhall Monterey was a rebadged Trooper.

We had a 2.2 Frontera Sport 3 door. Looked awesome IMO, but was rather **** on and off road. So I never really understood the appeal. The Freelander that replaced it was far superior. And despite the IFS of the Frontera, it handled and rode way worse than a classic Range Rover.
