Hi guys
Can anyone tell me if all steering relay lower bodies are the same as I've just noticed that my relay ( Bearmach ) flexes inside the chassis under load :(

The relay flexes, or the chassis does?
Relay flexing, i fully restored the 2a 18 months ago inc a new galv Richards chassis and a new Bearmach relay and the vehicle has done less that 4,000 miles since restoration, i do remember when i fitted the new relay that the relay more or less dropped in where as previouse series landy's i've owned they was always a tight fit when fitting them and not sure if the relay bodies were different.

I remember having the living wotnot out of mine to remove it, snug fit being the understatement!
Maybe it needs encouragement to be more snug? Then it wouldn't be able to flex?

Awr i remember when i was stripping the landy down as i was going to fit a new chassis and relay i didn't bother to remove the relay or lower ring and scrapped them with the old chassis then when i come fit the new relay into the new chassis i just bought a new ring so looks like that is where the problem started :(

I did try shiming it up with shim steel yesterday and got as much as i could get in but its still got play so today before work i decided to remove the relay but need to remove the rad as the bolt heads are facing the rad ( 200tdi ) so will probably have it out tomoz and decide what to do either try again with thinner shim steel or buy another relay or maybe another securing ring

Got it out now my plan is to wrap the shims i put in round the relay partially secured with cable ties but slack enough to fit more in then see if it will go in and if it goes in and tight i can snip the cable ties and press the relay in place but that will be tomorrow now.

There's a tighter version of that flange that someone is selling, could be on eBay. Have a look around for it.

Todays New steering relays are a slightly smaller diameter than the old originals, so fitting at the top with the 2 bolts is fine that will hold it in place but at the bottom the relay will be a slack fit in it's collar so a new smaller diameter collar needs to be fitted to stop the relay from moving around and causing slop in the steering................... I made my own out of 3 mm plate and fitted it in place of the old collar.
Job done and it works fine.

If it was me, I would cut the bolt heads off and pull them out through the front to save having to drain and remove the radiator.

You would have to replace the bolts, but it saves having to drain and refill the cooling system.
