Apple CarPlay

Hi all

I have an 2012 L322 and am thinking of upgrading to Apple CarPlay. I’m asking if I should just change the head unit to something new or go for a plug and play that keeps the original systems? Obviously a new unit would mean that I’ll loose the 4x4 info and park heating system but is significantly cheaper. A plug and play is the best of both worlds. The purist in me says plug and play but cost is cost. I’d appreciate feedback from anyone that has done either or just wants to weigh in.

Not that simple as changing head unit, have a look on YouTube for "Sam's motors and machine" for one option other thing is have a look on "fullfatrr" forum for more options.

I have done this same mod, it is involved but totally worth it in my opinion. Aftermarket is ok but you will loose the access to all the factory functions and the screens are often too shiny and reflective so it makes it harder to see in sunlight. You know where you are with the stock head unit.

I have a couple of very minor criticisms but they wouldn't stop me from doing it again. I can't nail down exactly what causes these things either, it has to be to do with the car "waking up" but not sure what.

1. Sometimes when you open the car and you'd expect to see the RANGE ROVER logo on the screen, CarPlay livens up but of course the amp is off so you just get the screen.
2. It doesn't always start in CarPlay mode (although the music comes through) so you have to long press the "hang up" button on the wheel to switch screens.

As I say, absolutely nothing major but worth noting.

Thanks, I’m thinking that this is the way to go. I’ll probably wimp out and take it to someone to install though rather than taking the dash apart myself.

It's only. a few bits to remove to get to the head unit.
