Freelander 1 Anyone solved squealing brakes permanently ?

Hi, 2002 TD4 Auto - greenstuff pads and coppa slip. Quiet for a few months and then massive squealing from front brakes.

Does anyone know of an anti-squeal shim that fits TD4 or whether the anti-squeal backing pads that you cut to size are any use?

It is driving me and the many horse riders I slow down for mad !

recently replaced the pads on mine ..
bought them from local LR dealer ..
turns out they are TWR pads .. and they look to have a plastic type coating on the back ..
no squeal from them .. although have only been on for 200 mile or so ..
( didn't have squeal on the prev. lot either ..
( only made a horrible noise when one pad wore down to the metal .. seized guide pin
( am assuming they were twr as well .. as same dealership fitted them ..

when changing them i cleaned the pad shims 'n sprayed them with some silicone
( new pads didn't come with new shims )

also got some new guide pins .. kit includes two different types of pin ..
didn't know why .. as brake diagrams only show one type ..
did a site search .. others have asked why ..
seems like one pin be for the upper guide .. the other for the lower ..
( i've yet to dismantle the calliper guide pins to find out for sure )
evidently .. according to LZ posts .. the lower pin .. with a rubber bit at the end ..
is designed to prevent squealing from the guide pins
which is evidently possible if one only uses the larger diameter 'upper' pins .. for both guide locations ..

use my disco..

Never had a problem with squealing brakes on a Freelander with OE brake pads and new shims. Copper slip is completely unnecessary when the complete pad/shim kit is fitted. I have had squealing on after market pads where the old shims have been reused. Guide pins need to be free and lubricated too.

Hmm, the only squeal I've had was from the rear brakes. I pulled the drums off and used an old brush to clean them up - good result. Front - I'd recommend a good clean and as already said lube appropriately.

Thanks for the advice. Both my V6 and TD4 have never had anti-squeal shims fitted. Is there a view that there should be some? Rave and Haynes do not mention them.

They should have them fitted really. However if non OE pads are used, often the original shims past there best and bind. This is why they are often removed. I used to leave 1 out if the pads I was using didn't come with new shims. I now use a supplier that sells OE kits so use those instead.

Did you change the discs too?

Alternatively, make sure all the caliper pins are sliding correctly.
