I have a 2004 1.8 and i had the bonnet up earlier and noticed this in the engine bay, must of been dropped while someone was working on it. I just want to know where it may be from so i can check its been replaced. The black thing around it is rubber if that helps

it almost looks like a bolt to hold a spring back with that recess in it but it also has a seal on it to stop dirt ingress from getting in have a look near the belts or on the gear box I have tried looking at the wife's car a 1800 but with no luck and can not get underneath because of bad back, hope this helps

Will continue my search tonight,

I think the top bolt unscrews so in that case the bottom part may be hidden and this could be a hard part to find

Even it may not even be from the freelander :/

Chances are, Wocka is right.... I've search the RAVE manual, but found nothing close to it. I would go back to the garage and ask if they had a bolt missing from someones car recently. if they say no, ask them where the offending item came from on yours, stress your concern and ask then to do a full inspection to put your mind at ease.
an honest garage would tell you they were working on something and looked for ages for a missing bolt.... or tell you to leave the car while they investigate. a dishonest garage would deny all knowledge of it...
But to ask... you would probably need to do it in a jokey type friendly manner - so they don't do the "silence" trick on you.

This one I Assume???? under the engine mounting bracket.

bolt (640x427).jpg
bolt (640x427).jpg that is about right and where the grove is in it that is where the plastic housing sits see the photo you can see where the Allen key is pointing to it my wife was complaining of loosing water now I knew it was not the head gasket so next choice was the water pump we got the plastic belt cover of and I saw the bolt you where on about, hope this helps

They may have just replaced it with a standard bolt... the extended ones are a bit prone to shearing off.
(Or they swapped it for the water pump with the raised bits.)

I doubt that they would swap it for a shorter one as the end holds the cover in place. i will post another picture later of where it connects into.

here is the picture so a long bolt is a must so the cut out you see fits into the cut out in the bolt this will also help you locate it where it is hope this helps
