Was wondering if anyone has fitted a big speaker system to their defender, thinking of adding aftermarket speakers and would be interested in what others have done.
Yes I have fitted a multi speaker system which I am very happy with
The system is based on an Alpine Bluetooth head, an Alpine underseet sub woofer and four 8x4 speakers, and an Alpine Amp.
The system is not yet finished but I a delighted with the sound especially when I Bluetooth my iPhone to the head.
I started by fitting out heavy plywood over the concave section of the rear sides just above the rear wheel arches. I then cut sections out of the same plywood to create two boxes to take two of the speakers. It's a little bit fiddly but well worth the effort and not too expensive.
I then filled the cavity with expanding foam which gives very good sound deadening and must help with heat retention and road noise.Following this first stage, I panneld the middle "wall" on both sides with the same plywood.
This allowed the fitting of another two speakers on the side facing the rear door and a good flat surface behind the front passenger seat to mount the first of two amplifiers and the Alpine Subwoofer. This leaves plenty of space for cables etc.
I should have mentioned that my defender started life as a van but now have side windows, Alpine roof lights and two LR defender facing seats.
I back filled all cavities with the expanding foam to act as insulation and sound deadening.
When all of the woodwork had been finished I covered all of the plywood with heavy duty grey office carpet. I also sound proofed the floor with expanded polystyrene sheet and more plywood covered with the same carpet.
It's a fair amount of work to get it all done and it's still not finished because my friendly auto electrician is working on his farm!
If you are interested to see the results so far I will get some images and try loading them to the forum
