L322 Anyone fitted a 2nd battery to there L322?

To be honest I’m ok with the basics but modern electrics on cars is beyond my knowledge, I do what I can myself but am lucky that I’ve got mate who are mastertechs albeit not with Land Rover,
And what wazzajnr says makes alot of sense so this might be an occasion to call in a favour rather than spend money on a split charge that may be unnecessary and may not work
 
My feeling is that you're not getting enough charge from the alternator or something is draining more from the battery than can be put back in over a 5 minute journey (although that would have to be quite a drain)
Best bet is the alternator so you need a good auto electrical place that does alternator rebuilds to test it properly.

no probs and didn’t wish for me to come across in how to tell people to suck eggs, lol

great you’ve got a mate that has the relevant equipment , i started there when my battery kept going flat as i needed to ensure i didn’t have any residual drain issue first

one of main reasons i fitted my split charge was when i go camping i can run lights off the aux battery without draining the main one and of course main battery lasting longer when i don’t use the landy

But I could just use a leisure battery,

Wazzajnr does this make sense, Once I’ve done a few short runs. If it’s left a week it still has plenty of charge to start the car no different than if it’s left for a day, still shows the hdc message but it’s the same for a day as it is for a week

indeed , i also used a leisure battery for the aux one, like the feature on the t max system as it has a link button so if the main one goes flat i can link both together to start the vehicle

my new main battery 100 amp/ 900cca and mines lasts a min of 3 x weeks not using it

but @Wazzajnr will know a lot more ref ur landy

Parasitic drain normally refers to cars that struggle to start after 2-3 weeks standing. (unless it's a very heavy drain in the order of an amp or more)
For example, a 100ah battery with a parasitic drain of an amp will be pretty much dead after 4 days.
Are you saying that if it's left for just 1 day it starts fine but you still get the hdc message?
 
Spot on wazzerjnr. It’s fine after any amount of time if I do a good run. Say 20 minutes driving, but if I do a few short runs then start the next day or the next week I get the hdc message, time isnt the issue it’s the short journeys that cause the issues
 
I guess you won't know the answer to this, but what happens if you do a longer journey then park it for a week? Do you get the same issue?
I'm still learning towards alternator output myself.
 
@youmitegetian , hope u don’t mind me asking , what kind of battery charger have u been using plse

only reason i ask, bought a CTEK one and found it to be really good , in the way is also tests the battery
 
No it’s fine if left for a week provided it’s not had a few short journeys beforehand, my old RR was exactly the same, that had a new battery because the old one was not great, but still had the same issue,
I’ve bought another new battery for this one that still has the same issue,
I took a chance on a new battery because I need another anyway so I’ll just use the old RR one
 
I’ve got a commercial battery charger at work that we use on Hgv batteries, it’s a few years old but proven to be good. also a descent drop tester to test the battery.

thks, was just curious , think as well , alternator , seeing after u use it for short runs it then plays up

wondering as urs should be obd2 domo,ant , have u got a diagnostic reader or been plugged in at any time plse
 
Yeah it’s only a cheap one but only for LR icarsoft seems to be very good for what I’ve needed it for in the past

personally haven’t got any experiance with them , i got an IId by gap for mine , didn’t wish to keep messing around with main dealer costs
 
sounds like the alternator is not putting out enough it should be just under 15v at 2000rpm under max load lights heater etc
if yours is putting almost 14v its low .
 
In the boot right hand side little lift up flap to store tow bar in, take out the plastic tray thing battery sits in there positive to positive on rear right hand side fuse board and negative to a bolt near spare wheel or drill a hole somewhere for one, and yes I know its maybe not the right way but it works just gives you that bit of extra capacity, few people have done it like that. Now whats that saying, google is your friend.
 
That’s an interesting way of doing it. And presumably it’ll charge from the car as well without the need for a split charge set up?
 
Need to be careful with that method that the cable to the back of the car can carry the full current that a flat battery demands or is fused at source to the current carrying capacity of the cable.
If the second battery is flat, there could easily be 100+ amps flowing in that cable.
