Anyone ever tried upgrading heater controls on a disco 1 to the disco 2 digital ones

Hi my heater fan control switch is a wee bit dicky, that it cuts off , and I have to move it ever so slightly to get going again, and pretty sure I don't have 3-4 on the settings I.e. all or nothing.

Anyhoo, I converted a mondeo from manual to digital heater controls before and wondered if it is possible in the disco as I see some base 2's have the old manual controls to. As with the mondeo I'm not looking for full automation just digital control over the heat and fans. Although it was possible to hook up all the sensors with the mondeo to make fully automatic, I don't really need that function.
I just thought they are the same price if I'm changing it out anyway, and may be a neater and nicer upgrade?

Possible?????

It sounds like your problem is caused by a faulty "variable resistor" which is on the fan casing. Easy enough to get at and cheap enough to change.

That would give you reliable variable speeds again.

Don't know about the rest of your question though, as D2 Climate Control is all ECU controlled.

This could be my problem, as I don't seem to have speed 2, but all the others work - is it similar to those on the MG ZS's etc as have changed my Mrs's one probably yearly for around a tenner as that one always loses speeds 1 & 2?

Don't suppose you know the part number?

Every time I was searching for variable heating resistor it was coming up blank.

Put in the part number and hey presto :cool:

That's because its not variable resistor, but three separate resistors of different values cobbled together to form a pack, each one selected by the sliding switch with fourth position being a direct feed to the fan motor. Simples :)
 
Yeh this deffinately my problem, but as said just wondered if an upgrade was possible for a wee upgrade. Long shot I know. I would be more confident if I could see the back of a d2 heater control compaired with a D1, that would make or break the idea. The mondeo I have dine previously despite being manual had electronic connections at the back , so was a simple swap with a few extra wires to ve soldered on to gain certain inputs. But have a feeling I would need solenoids or the heater matrix from a d2 to control temp electronically in a D1, I'm sure the fan input would be the same or easy enough to wire up once pin function was established.
 
Thebiglad- so much for cheap to replace 50-100 quid for that wee pack. Although weirdly I have seen the whole fan units with the what looks like the pack still attached for about 20.

It would be possible to convert a D1s manual air con to an automatic system like the D2s. If you have the kit and time to do it, go ahead, don't forget to take some pics and let the Forum know.:)
 
Like Discool says, anything is possible, but reckon this one will be a 'biggy' as the normal controls manually push/pull rods to change the heating whereas the digital one just has a plug socket on the back, so lots of modding will be required.

A u say big job but an interesting one maybe.

Bog standard servos do the push/pull so still mechanical, then there's the various sensor inputs and of course the user interface both electrical, I suspect the only "digital" item is the ECU/s after all the D2 system is old school' in todays vehicle air con technology.:)
 
Still going to cost a fair few beer tokens though.....

I was thinking of just changing the knobs to something more modern instead.
 
Yeh I m thinking it could be a bit far fetched and have plenty to be getting on with , what with my immobilizer playing up, and starting when it feels like it. Passenger door spring gone, and boot handle deciding to stick . So perhaps this is one for the rare days for when you can concentrate in upgrading rather than fixing, lol, as if that ever happens.

I have been waiting for that day for two years and it's still not happened, bloody landrovers :mad2:

My immobiliser failed last week and although I could turn over the engine the supply from the spider to in my case to the ignition-coil failed.
A direct 12v supply from a terminal in the fuse box was all that was needed and which now has been fitted, no need to go any where near the spider.
