I've recently got myself a new front winch,

I was going to put my old warn xd9000 on the rear as I find my self doing a lot off road recovery, at pay and plays helping a mate out.

Mines a 90 van that gets used for camping walking the dogs and off roading. The last mostly.

I was thinking of mounting my xd in the rear door by making a mount off the chassis that goes to under the floor like a n shape with a brace on both sides, and mount the winch on a plate the has the hawz on it attached.

And wire it up with a Anderson connector for the positive and ground and then the dash mounted in out switch on something like this

HYGST-30PSK - HYLEC - PLUG & SOCKET, LIGHTING, 3 POLE | Farnell United Kingdom

The idea behind this is that it bolts through the floor with some big bolts through the plate the winch is on through the floor and the plate below and when I don't want it I just gave 4 bolts and 2 plugs As the solinoid would be mounted on the winch,

I will just have the rear door open to winch from the rear.

I don't want to mount it below the floor as I hve a NATO hitch that I use for recovery and towing my sankey,

Any thing thats nit going to work ,ideas

I did think about mouthing it against the bulk head and just have the hawz by the rear door as I have loads to mount from with the cage.

Somthing like this could work for you -

Chap needs a tow hitch though!

Its not mine, im not that neat or have that money lol just a pic I came across when researching Landys.

From what I remember it was done by East Coast Rover Specialists, which sadly is in the US.

Though im sure youll be able to knock up your own!

Do you mean something like this? As you suggested, fitting a hefty plate under the rear floor (braced to the chassis) then bolting this tray on the top so it sandwiches the normal floor between the two.

You could cut a hole in the rear door so the fairlead sticks out enough to protect the rope, or even get an old tailgate with a similar hole cut out, so you can chuck ropes etc over the top easily for comps/play days and then swap back to a full door when not required.

A bit like this one (found on another forum)

This is another idea: http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showtopic=831&page=2

Both of those solutions are hideous!

Both solutions spoil the departure angle!

If you are going to do it, do it right!

Departure angle still good. Yes it does work.

Towing? Yes we regularly tow with it.

Yes.

If you look at the first photo you will see the winch hook attached to the recovery eye. Take recovery eye off and attach tow ball.

Yeah that smack on what I'm thinking, thought about the early type split tail gate and can just lift the bottom half off when needed

If your going to cut the cross member them why not just move it a few more inches back do it sits flush? Or better still like the wlm has on his disco,

don't have any probs with me current rear winch tho ;)

I'd do that but I use my nato hitch and trailer, and its much safer when recovering off road.

No, it is a 300 TDi, with a Southdown tank guard with detachable tow ball and recovery eye.

on a side note.

Be a little careful recovering from the nato hitch. Get some jate rings or summit that pulls down the length of the chassis rails rather than on the centre of your cross member.

I have seen them mounted inside the rear door, will need some bracing but its not the hardest to do. Have a word with clive (pressbrake) about maybe making a crossmember that allows both, I dout it would cost much more than all the meswsing making supports e.t.c. for a floor mounted winch tray and we all know clives stuff is top notch, I will happily recover of my crossmember now...

Is it really that bad to recover from the tow hitch?

Surely its tough enough considering its used for towing..

Towing dosent exert tonnes of force though. When a vehicle is seriously stuck it can add the weight of the vehicle again in force.

Does that still apply if your using a braced towing hitch?

i imagine it will help, but the general advice i was given is that you want to exert force down the chassis rails.
