Anyone bought a new defender chassis recently ?

I didn't know they supplied chassis haven't seen anything on their website. I will definetly be using them in the future I use them for Axle brackets and when Rear tub repair parts can't fault them

I never intended to swap my chassis. I investigated some rust early in the year, around the dumb irons. The investigation of 2 off 5-6mm holes (one on each side) lead to grinding off a piece of “mastic covered waxoil” around 5” long and as wide as the dumb iron. Then the bulkhead randomly split when the passenger side door hinges decided they would seize solid after being parked for over a week. All added together, the plan was to strip the body, paint it, replace anything broken, weld the chassis and be back on the road by August. It’s now October and still waiting for the chassis. The best laid plans and all that.

I’m not certain of what their status is with the chassis at the minute. I was there in person, spoke to the right person at the right time, and placed an order. I would contact them and ask. They may be updating their website, as it gets updated with new products most weeks/months.

It was Marslands (now) KD-Land Rovers that told me that YRM now sell their chassis I only posted as thought maybe helpful to the masses. When I do start another rebuild i will definetly be going to YRM as they are good company to deal with and I couldn't fault the Chassis I bought from Marslands last year.

Yours sounds as if needs more work required than mine. Due to being laid up after having rods and screws (hope they are galvanised he he !) installed in my spine , I have all day to look for goodies on the internet for my defender (missus constantly reminding me I should set and stick to a budget (spoilsport). Would rather be out there tinkering with it

There's some right dodgy barstewards out there!! Whats your plans for fixing the bulkhead?

What did you do to yourself to end up with loads scaffolding in your back?
I'm lucky my girlfriend doesn't get a say on how much I spend on the Land Rover although she does moan about the amount of time I spend in the workshop tinkering on it especially if i've been working away from home for a month and go to workshop on my weekend off lol

Initially I contacted Richards, but their waiting list was more than I could afford to have the vehicle off the road for, Marslands too had a big wait, so I got mine from britpart (was a Marslands galv chassis) but they had it in stock ready to ship out. I was mega chuffed with mine, nothing needed re-tapping or filing or anything, spot on!

Lifting something at work (loud clicking / cracking noise but no pain), day and a half later couldn't stand. cut a long boring story short, eventually went private (they actually did some tests xray/CT/mri), I thought I'd just pulled something, But told back broken. Anyway had op and just a case of time now (6 - 12 months before I can do manual labour while bone graft heals). More concerned about my 300 tdi. missus doesn't mind too much now I'm not spending every penny on motorbikes and trackdays !!!

Good luck with that. To give you a rough idea of what I have spent so far. I had just under £3K in a savings account, then maxed my credit card out, another £3K, and finally moved onto my wife’s credit card (only a couple hundred £ on that). I think I have everything bought that I needed, but it’s mad how it suddenly snowballs when you start stripping it.

I read a post/quote on one of the Land Rover forums, “if you don’t intend to replace it, don’t remove it”. After 6-7months of doing mine, I can’t stress how true that statement is.

Replace it with a refurbed and galved one. It’s been primered on one side, and seam sealed EVERY joint where 2 pieces touch. The second side will be done tomorrow. Paint it green, protect the insides of the structure (any advice here?). Then store and wait for the rebuild.

Cheers Mick, I keep adding more stuff to my list, more to do with want than need. Scary how it mounts up though.

I'm not trade and was able to buy direct but not sure if things havee changed since it's become KD be worth calling them at least you know your getting a genuine Land Rover Chassis thats only been modified to suit your engine type.

Not been over rest of thread yet, but how is this a genuine LR chassis? I thought these were all after-Market makers/companies? Sorry to be dim..... A

The original chassis manufacturer is GKN. Marsland chassis are the ONLY company authorised to purchase chassis direct from them. Marsland are now KD Land Rover, so only they can supply a genuine chassis. All other manufacturer supply a pattern part, some may be built on original chassis jigs, but that doesn’t make them OEM.

My advice is don't get one from ashtree's the workmanship is shocking and don't fit worth a feck

A lot of people rate their bulkheads though. Mine isn’t all it’s cracked up to be, but mine is from a guy who does them in his spare time. eBay special.

They get them from the people who made the chassis for Land Rover then modify to suit. Basically they are the latest TDCI chassis they then weld on say 200Tdi engine mounts then galvanise them.

I did a thread when doing my bulkhead swap if you have a search you will find it on here. I bought mines painted from them no seam sealer used and was rough as .......

I have read some bad things from their work, but wondered if they were “Friday jobs” rather than “everyday jobs”, maybe it’s the latter.

It was a 6week delay and excuses with me travelling to Southampton to finally pick it up Job.
