Anybody interested in a batch of smaller more compact back boxes...?

But of course cost dependant.

I did manage to touch mine today, but it was fairly interesting muddy step down. Bent the tow electrics socket. Nothing else.

I replaced mine last last year with a after market box , that is a lot smaller than the oem part , not expecting it to last , so will be interested in the small back box for a fair price :)

@ SE88

do you have one for a template ?
i.e. the initial bend from the mid section .. and spacing for the hanger fixin's

you can have mine if needed .. as i gotta take it off to replace it anyways
( outer skin is rusted and peeling off .. was an mot advisory )
can run it without .. just need to rig up a temporary hanger of somesort

i.e. IF you decide to go ahead with a batch of them

I've got my own backbox (it was a new part when I bought the car 18 months ago), can leave it off my car for a day or two no problem.

I'm gonna go see my local friendly exhaust guy sometime this week, will get a price on 5 to give people a ballpark idea on price. I spoke to him yesterday, and he's up for it

OK lets start a list, I like lists. If we give it til after the weekend for people to show interest, I'll go see my favourite local exhaust place early next week. Not quite the V8 racing Corvette's and rally cars they normally build, but still :D

Hi SES88. Please add me to the list too as a definite buyer. (My 'Sport' has an absurd lack of ground clearance due to the big rear silencer box with a 40mm suspension drop).

So the list so far is:

My big box is hitting my towbar all the time. Very annoying.

Really. My V6 rear box is enormous but it's now where near close enough to hit the tow bar!!

It's the original box so isn't doing to bad at 12+ years old. I modified it last year to reduce back pressure but it still weighs a ton!!
Are there any pictures and dimensions available for these smaller boxes yet?

Any photos of the low profile rear box fitted to compare against a standard OEM part.

Cheers.

The "exhaust guard" group buy thread got taken over by the exhaust thread, but basically this will be the spec...

Fully stainless steel (so you'll never need another back box)
Same bend shape off the existing exhaust
4.5" (115mm for the younger ones) dia. back box, straight through, nothing inside it
Tail pipe off the other side, bent down and slash cut (cheaper than putting a tip on it, and looks better)

Nothing has been made yet so no photos, but you can tell by the size of it that it'll be a much smaller unit, will sit higher under the floor too so you'll barely even see it in all fairness, especially if you have a towbar or similar fitted.

Price works out at £160 inc. VAT & Delivery, I have the Minimum 5 now, payment details for orders will be sent out next week, probably Monday, so that's when the group buy will close. I may get an extra couple made, but I may not, haven't decided yet.

This is why I want a smaller back box......

How can you get away with the rear box being empty? It won't silence the air flow so it will sound like a chav-mobile.

Randomly, I had to replace the rear box on mine a few weeks back as it failed leaving it unattached and I would say that it was hardly any louder which I was surprised at. It's a td4 so I'm guessing the turbo goes some way to change the exhaust flow etc.

The aftermarket one I got is a fair bit smaller and was from euro car parts but I can see the advantage of smaller still!

Its a turbo diesel with a cat and middle silencer still in position, the turbo kills a lot of the noise on a diesel and the other stuff dims the rest. There may be a slight change in "tone" but unlikely to be a noticeable change in noise...As said, may also hear a little more turbo whistle too, and it should spool a little faster, but thats it

So they're not for the v6 then?

Is the backbox fitment on the V6 the same as it is for the rest of the range? If so yes it'll fit fine, but you'll probably notice a little more noise, again you've still got the cat? and a middle section to dumb the noise down a bit....Love the sound of a v6 though :D

The V6 box is a different to the TD4. I suspect it's has the same dimensions but that's where the similarly ends. The V6 has twin outlets instead of the single outlet of the TD4.
Internally the V6 has a complex set of baffles designed to make the engine quiet.
I modified mine to ease back pressure, the down side to this is noise. It's not to bad, nowhere near as loud as my ZS180's straight through system but it's not quiet now ether.
I would guess that the small rear box would be noisier then my current set up, this would stop me getting one.
Obviously on the TD4, the turbo removes most of the sound energy so by the time the sound has reached the tail pipe, there is little energy left to make much noise.
