So, took fuel pump back to Britparts this morning - guy behind the counter was VERY efficient! Paid for new fuel pump (refundable if returned pump is found to be faulty). Mechanic is CERTAIN fuel pump fitted in September (from Britparts) is faulty so holding my breath until he fits new fuel pump.........L322 been off the road for eight weeks now and I’m desperate for my car! I’m self-employed, need to be mobile, and cannot cope being ferried around by now reluctant and grumpy husband in his bone-shaking Defender! Hopefully it’ll be good news from garage tomorrow! Wish me luck!
 
No, I wouldn't have and never have bought the cheapest brake part available. It's completely up to you what you buy it's your money. My experience (not a lot of it seeing as i'm only 31) is that cheap parts mean shorter life, replaced more often and in the case of your pump, higher failure rate.

When you search for a part by number just add "G" on the end and you should get a good quality part even if it is in a blue box.
I do agree though that if you buy the cheapest possible parts you are leaving yourself open to trouble. Bearings I always try to get Timken, seals Cortico, often arrive in a blue box :p:p
That said there often isn't a lot of choice for parts for an old classic and I just have to use what is available.
 
Thank you everyone for your opinions. I now know that, in future, I need to buy either genuine Land Rover parts or OEM rather than from other sellers. To use my late dad’s words ”the cheapest is always the dearest in the long run”. Only used Britparts because my son-in-law, who’d previously owned my L322 for six years, bought from them. L322 off the road now for eight weeks - hoping to hear from garage tomorrow - getting a bit tedious now and husband fed up driving me around in his agricultural Defender (which he loves!). Thanks, guys!

I'm sorry to be pedantic but I still don't get it, why are you paying for a new pump & having to wait until THEY decide if the returned item is faulty in order to receive a refund ? :confused:

norseman - it's their policy - you return the part and can either wait until the manufactures have had a look at it and declare it faulty and replace it free if charge, or you buy a new part (fuel pump in my case), BrutParts return the part to the manufactures, and, if they say it’s faulty, then you get a refund. We didn’t want to wait for God knows how long the manufactures will take to make their decision so we bought another fuel pump and are keeping our fingers crossed that they say the one we returned is faulty and will give us a refund.

It might be their policy, but it contravenes the sale of goods act, your contract is with the seller.
 
I'm with Datatek here, someone needs to point that out to them … just because they are a big company doesn't mean they can bend the law to suit themselves.
Years ago I had a PAS pump fail (the MOT) due to the seals leaking when the unit was a couple of months out of warranty but the car had only done about 3000m. I got my Indie to claim on the grounds that due to the low mileage the pump was unfit for purpose. At first the supplier wouldn't entertain the request, I mentioned Trading standards & a replacement mysteriously arrived a couple of days later :rolleyes:

Sod taking it back. I bought an In tank pump for my '38.
It was a VDO unit at £155...
It was a sting In the ass but....
I don't really want to have to replace it again.. and thankfully I do it myself. Once is enough. Although the britpart was less than half the price...:eek:
