hello all ..

looking for a little conformation with regard to high mounted brake lights ..

Got to fit a new back door on my defender , there are a few options out there and one is without a high mount brake light

My question is, do I need a high mount light for the mot ?, if its not fitted then I'm thinking its ok , can anyone confirm this before I order up this door ..

Cheers . . .

Must work if fitted but don't have to be fitted.

Vehicles first used on or after 1 January 1971 must be fitted with two obligatory stop lamps.

Additional stop lamps fitted and connected must be tested. Where extra lamps are fitted and there is doubt as to whether they are connected, the benefit of this doubt should be given to the presenter.

ok , cheers ... as much as I thought really , will make swapping my bk door a bit easier ...

I read some time ago on VOSA site, that if the vehicle left the factory with a eye level brake light, it must be working. But they are classed as additional, so if not fitted will be ok.

its likely that id fit one at a later date .. it just that the door I have seen doesn't come with it ... On mine the wiring loom for the high mount brake is run round the inside of the door frame not sure if this was factory as I have seen ones which attract to the element on the glass ...

but for now I will order my door without the high mount specific glass ... :)

The high level rear light reduces the chance of other vehicles rear ending you. Especially higher vehicles like trucks. I would be wanting one fitted as soon as possible. Tratter brake lights are not the brightest.

What age is your vehicle?

And there are somethings which are not tested as part of the MoT, but you may still be breaking Construction & Use Regulations, which would technically mean your vehicle is not road worthy. Which could pose an issue if you are involved in an RTI.

If fitted and not working it has to proven by the tester, without dismantling that it is connected. Otherwise its a red lens and will pass.
That said, as above. Better to have one and stop that one person in your rear. Tends to scratch the tow ball.

not fitted the new back door yet , But the one im ordering has glass in it , but not with the high mount light ... I may as a latter job just putt the wiring through the frame and retro fit the high mount light ...
