Hey there, i'm looking at buying a 1999 disco 2, TD5 with around 170k miles on it. It appears to run well with the only issue being a slight oil leak (this can't put you off a landy xD). Was wondering if anyone had any advice on what I should look for to make sure its mechanically sound. Many thanks in advance!

Dont!
Unless you get a land rover owner to check it over especially the chassis, d2 are rot boxes same as all previous models.
D3 are going the same way.
Once any of them hit 15 yrs old they are on borrowed time.

Thanks for that, if there is minimal rust on the chassis is it still a no go?

The chassis is the main issue, have a search on here or google for images.
Body off job, will cost more than the car is worth if the rot is bad.

I got a 2001 model in 2020 (at the right price) because the rear quarter part of the chassis was rotten (which, as I can't weld had to pay someone to do it) but you can replace various bits (1/4, 1/2 or full the 1/4 being the easiest or just patch it if things aren't too bad). As @lynall says any you want to look at try & take someone along with you who knows about them, alternatively (not sure where you live) but the LR show at the east of England show ground is on (google it) next month where you can talk with hundreds of D2 owners & they'll be more than happy to show you, I'm sure, where & what to look for if your still keen:), all the best.

I have a 1999 D2, with 154000 on the clock, yes fortunately as an ex Fab Welder, ex MOT tester I can keep it going, the best bit is that you can maybe with a bit of help or advice 'FIX IT YOURSELF', and that the question you need to answer is, can you fix it or will it be in a garage, if you can then get it if you cant then pass on it, as for my own one I have done all the usual job chassis, sunroof, headliner, ball joints etc it all comes with the car,

D2s have stopped losing value now, if everything is solid but chassis it can be worth fixing.

Just think what else could you get to replace one?
