A couple or three times since having the auto box and torque converter repaired, I have a small (I hope) problem. I can pull on the drive after a run and all is well, gearbox and torque converter working fine. But on the next outing after starting the motor I can move the gear selector into reverse, drive, one two and three and there is no drive, at all. I can restart the engine and it's still the same, no drive in any gear. The only way to get the drive back is to move the high/lo lever in and out a couple of times, then the main gear selector works fine. I have been to the repair shop who did the work and I am taking it back in next week. One of their mechanics thinks the hi/lo box may be to blame, but like he says better to have it on the ramp before the official verdict of the fault.
I have faith in the company as rebuilding and repairing auto box's is their business. The only thing I "worry" about is the hi/lo linkage, I believe in the Td5 2004 this linkage is by rod, not by a cable, therefore it is either in hi, neutral or low, unlike a cable that may require some adjustment to select the h/l gear. Please tell me no electrics come into play here.
I really like the auto Td5, but I am just starting to think the manual would have been the better buy in a 14 year old car. It stands me at over 6k now, well into Disco3 territory.

£6k buys a high mile/rough/ropey D3 that is far more complicated than a D2, if you think £6k is bad on a D2 then you really would be having a cow with garage bills for a D3 LOLZ.

Now then, D2 is a cable operated transfer box not rod as per the D1.

PS, I'm £12k in on a 26yr old 200Tdi D1, and I wouldn't change a thing :)

Sounds like simple adjustments and linkage issues.
My P38 has "issues" with Fwd/Reverse selection and sometimes selects nothing.
I know its the XYZ switching and the cable wants adjusting. On my to-do list for when it really becomes a 50:50 issue.

A faulting XYZ switch can cause an iffy gear selector..

Mine is a bit iffy.

Kind of depends on her mood!!

Ah so, it might just require a little adjustment of the Hi/Lo selector cable then. Thanks for that chaps, I will sleep easier tonight. The help is much appreciated.

Job sorted, bit of tweaking required, nowt else. Just to add, new glo plugs fitted and a new (to me) tailgate window, old one was marked by the wiper arm (last owner) and the heated element did not work, all good now. More brass spent, happy days. When will it end.
