Hi, I know there's a million threads on upgrading the speakers in the Freelander Mk1, but I've not found an answer.

I have a 2005 Facelift with the standard (non-Harman Kardon) speakers. Can I swap theses straight for the Harman Kardon ones and, if so, is it worth it? Are they range-limited, as they're normally paired with the sub.

They're 21 each on ebay at the moment. I was thinking of making an offer for the set.

I'm not looking to rattle the windows, just make an improvement.

Thanks!

There's not much difference between the standard door speakers and HK versions. The HK take a few more Watts and slightly lower compliant suspension. This makes them less able to reproduce low frequencies than the standard door speakers.
What are you trying to gain?
You'll not improve sound while using the factory HU. The standard speakers will sound better with a better HU. Add a decent sub for more improvement. ;)

This is what I did to my old V6 and currently doing to my 05 SE too.https://www.landyzone.co.uk/land-rover/freelander-gets-a-proper-sub-woofer.223690/

My SE now has this HU installed.

Sub is a work in progress.

Thanks! I've already ordered a new head unit and associated parts. I'm hoping the speakers perk up a bit but they just sound so flat, with no definition in any of the ranges. I'd rather buy some upgraded speakers than lose loadspace to a sub (cubby hole will be covered by a boot liner, so that's out too)

I'm just trying to weigh up whether OEM Hardon Kardon speakers with their correct mount will actually sound better than aftermarket ones.

Sounds like a set of decent aftermarket ones is the way to go, and reuse the mounts from the OEM speakers, as per this guide https://www.landyzone.co.uk/land-rover/speaker-replacement.220630/

If anyone knows of a decent, compact active sub, I may give that a go and then I can alway remove it when the dog complains.

Are your tweeters working?
From my experience, the factory HU is very mediocre.
My Sony adds power and sparkle, whereas the factory HU was muffled and flat.
However adding a decent sub transforms the sound completely.

If you want to bin the factory door speakers. Then you can make up some ply spacer rings and fit decent 6.5" speakers. Something from MB Quart or even Kenwood will be a massive improvement on the factory stuff.

You'd be better off spending some money on sound deadening for the doors. Otherwise the improvement in sound will be compromised by rattles and buzzing door components.
