Hello folks. I am currently rebuilding a 1977 series III, 2.285, 5 brg crank diesel vehicle.
I am at the wiring stage and whilst most is pretty simple there are one or two aspects that throw me.
The first is not related to the title but the pin outs shown on the ignition key wiring seem to be incorrect in all the manuals. After buying a new switch and bussing out the connections it seems term 1 is power in, 2 is glow plugs, 3 is white stage 2 feed and 4 is red/white to start solenoid. Not as in all the book diagrams. And, on testing in off position 2 and 4 are connected, grounding glow plugs and start sov. Stage 2 is power to system 3 ( white), stage 3 is power to glow, 1 & 2 connected, stage 4 is power to glow and start sov, 1 & 2 & 4 connected. Then you return to stage 2, which is what you would expect, power to systems. Am I missing something?
Then on to the brake fail harness … so none of the wiring diagrams seem to work because of the fact that, when you switch to start (red/white) to sov, 3 (white) is disconnected during the starting crank. Therefore no power to light the brake fail light when the start power energises the brake fail relay. What am I missing here. I have white from fuse box, through light, down to PDWA, then back ( black/ white), I have a relay energised on start ( red/ white) to ground, then the relay switch ( black/white) to ground. But, nothing to power the light during start. Going bonkers trying to figure this out.

do not know the switch ref or if it's the correct one but try as below

Hi, yes, it’s definitely the diesel switch, even spades 1 and 2 are larger for the power and glow plugs. In the manual the switch is numbered 1 to glow plugs, 2 to start red/white solenoid, 3 to white service and 4 as power in. However, that is not how the switch is working as stated above. If I wired it as per the diagram I’d have a very large terminal coming from the battery on a normal sized spade on terminal 4 which would basically switch on the starter motor when the key was in the off position. This is how it’s buzzing out;
ignition switch
1). Off - terms 2 and 4 connected - start cct and glow plugs grounded
2). Service - terms 1 and 3 connected - power from battery connected to white feed to fuse box and charge, oil pressure & low fuel lights.
3). Glow - terms 1 and 2 connected - power to glow plugs only brown/red, service disconnected.
4). Start - terms 1 and 2 and 1 and 4 white/red connected hence engine crank with glow plugs
2). Key released to finish cranking, engine running (hopefully), glow plugs off and return to service position.
All very interesting.
I’ll post an update after I’ve burnt the garage down 😳
