Brought my series 3 for a good spin this evening ( nice weather and all that!) and got home turned it off and then a pretty major leak started from directly under engine it has since stopped, it seemed like water then I saw a slight colour in it so I'm guessing its coolant? It's first time it's had a good drive in a while and I was going about 60mph on the run so maybe I opened up Pandora's box! Also I noticed when I turned it off there was a lot of rattling and vibration before it actually stopped. Any ideas ??

Sounds like it got very hot, and was running on as a result - so I'm guessing there's not much coolant left in there.

Now it's cooled down, fill it up with water, and see where it pours out. It's likely to be very obvious.

Ok poured water in to rad and literally came out as soon as I poured in, looks like a constant flow from one area. Diagnosis is not my strong point could it be damaged pipe? ( wishful thinking) or worse??

Will do might be this evening before I can, this may sound mad but lot of the water seems to be coming from one of the bolts holding the sump? Maybe it's just building up there, more investigation needed.

That would explain water near sump Blackburn, gonna dive in tonight and try sort but looks like water pump I'm guessing so

Sounds like pump. I had a water leak I couldn't find for ages because it was a split pipe that only opened up when it got hot so whenever I put new water in I couldn't see it.

Ok, have got the ball rolling, removed fan belt, lost at least an hour removing god damn cowl and shroud thanks to some nicely rusted screws!!! Aaarrrgggh!! Anyway have removed 4 bolts on front of fan but cannot for the life of me get fan off.... What's the story here what am I missing??

I'm impressed u got a S3 to 60mph? Maybe that is what stressed the pump. A std S3 wasn't really designed to that speed. Chugging speed is 40 mph for a happy landy. Designed for a different world!

Water pump off! Any ideas how much coolant required whèn filling back up radiator? Also which coolant for series 3?

As much as it takes... Given that you've been leaking-and-topping up, this is probably a good opportunity for a full drain-flush-and-change.

Also which coolant for series 3?

Normal green is fine, red organic if you fancy leaving it longer before the next change. But if you change to red, make sure you flush thoroughly, including the heater.

i'm not surprised at all at 60mph, i've got mates with bog standard 2.25p S2/2a's that will pull 60mph without much if any trouble, even a 2.25d in good condition will go that fast

any that won't do 55mph have either got something wrong with them or a driver with a very light right foot

a good condition, tuned 2.25p will push 70mph

Ha ha no nitrous but it did manage 60mph without any great difficulty, I think water pump was on its way out anyway lots of small coolant leaks over last few weeks, new pump coming tomorrow so hopefully she will be back on the road for the weekend.

On another note I'm planning to get it resprayed next month (hopefully!). The precious owner hand painted it and I'm hoping to bring it back to the original Mid grey. I've been told that because its been hand painted that i will have to use coach paint as opposed to 2 pack? Any thoughts in this?

Worth buying one of these
Anti freeze tester | eBay
I have a gunson type. Had trouble last year with fluid passing to expansion tank due to no seal on rad cap and would have cost me a fortune if I'd had to drain and refill to get correct concentration.
