Hi guys,
recently bought a 2002 TD4 and loving it .. except for a knocking noise when going over bumps in road. It sounds as if it's coming from the rear RH side. Nothing to do with the steering or diff though, I'm pretty sure. Any idea's ?
Thanks, Mike.

Having driven it a bit more this weekend it sounds more like it's under the drivers seat area. I had a good look underneath and can't see anything wrong chassis wise. Have ordered a couple of drop links and will try swapping them ... :)
Mike.

Thanks for the replies :) Got it sorted, changed the drop links and it's quiet now. Also did the oil and filter .. and the crank breather filter ... I'm finding it really interesting working on a car again :D Getting the alloys off was a real pig of a job though

I have the identical noise too, sounds like it's from the rear, but open all the windows and its more as if it's just forward of the drivers seat backrest. I'm going to replace the lower arms anyway as both ball joint rubbers have split, so I'll add the drop arms to the shopping list too, and bushes of course. Is it absolutely necessary to remove the hub, disc etc, or can the ball joint nut be "got at" in situ and the joint split away from the hub carrier? Would save a lot of time perhaps?

Check the rear silencer, the rear input side mount had snapped on mine so on some bumps it would knock against the underside/tow hitch frame. 5 mins with a welder and the knocking stopped.

I only did the drop links ... that only meant removing the wheels, nothing else :)

I had the car on a pillar lift at work a few months back to do the big 72k service, the rear bushes, diff mounts, exhaust, and sub frame mounts were OK. This is when I spotted the split ball joint rubbers on the front wishbones. With the front wheels off the ground it was spotted, on its wheels, nothing was seen, just starting to go, a couple of mil splits. Strangely, the noise is only apparent when going over potholes or speed ramps at 20 30 mph, off road tracks, at any speed. Has got worse over the last week or so.
