Another Impetuous Fool!

After walking away from the last RRS I viewed, (the one with the oil leak from the injector and the owner who seemed intent on destroying his engine), I stumbled across another which was in similar condition but was definitely far better mechanically!

The vehicle drove fine but with just a hint of 'wallowing', no smoke, (of any colour), engine and gearbox responsive, all electrics that I had time to test worked, (including the AC - not that we have required AC this year as of yet)!

Bodywork in very good condition with a couple of very small dings and engine bay very clean.

Interior tidy and leather OK but quite worn on driver seat and will require a deep clean, (couple of straps of duct tape on carpet - presumably hiding worn carpet area)?

No engine or transmission error codes and only picked up about 4 or 5 one relating to headlamp swivel motor, (neither headlights swivel currently), another relates to one of the ventilation motors - I have cleared all errors and will recheck later.

So I decided to take a gamble and puchased the vehicle.

Boot was a mess with spare wheel sitting inside and bits of, (what I presume are the under vehicle wheel mounting kit), lying on tool tray?

The only thing missing was the tow bar - the primary reason, (excuse), for becoming a Land Rover owner once again!!!

I note that there are the mountings for the two electrical connectors for towing but not sure if the tow bar bracket is fitted - I will take a closer look today?

That will allow me to decide whether I need both the bracket and tow bar or just a tow bar to fit the bracket.

I will also need to decide whether to buy a purpose built wiring harness or make one up myyself?

Let's hope nothing untoward happens for at least a few days so that I can remain suitably pleased with the new addition to the family!!

Hope its as good as you think on closer inspection but good luck with it.
As far as the electrical bits for the towbar, I would buy a proper kit as some come with a box if trickery (depending on year) plus it will plug straight in and be neat.

fingers crossed the wallowing isn’t the dynamic anti roll bars failing as there around £800 each, ur normally see fluid around them , best to also check the fluid level

indeed there should be 2 x connectors in the boot side locker , the Blank connections should be on the ends, plus 1 in buying a kit , some will also require the CCF files to be changed via diagnostics when I tow at is fitted because it will then disable the rear parking sensors

if it’s the 2.7 / 3.0 TDV6 engine plse ensure the belts and oil pump have been replaced

Many thanks for the comprehensive welcome !


I checked all fluids, (and I checked the owners driveway), prior to purchase - all fluid reservoirs topped up nicely and absolutely no oil stains on the drive, (but it could have been kept in a garage of course)!


The vehicle has now covered approximately 250 miles under my ownership and I have to admit to being just a little smitten - but also very wary as this is my third incarnation of the RR marque and so I know that something WILL be lurking around one of the next corners!

I will take a look underneath for any 'oily' patches at each corner when I have a few moments spare!


So far the driving experience has been very good, (but not excellent), purely due to the slight wallowing of the vehicle.

I am not sure if it is a very slight change in suspension height, (active suspension), or part of the other system that controls the body roll and, presumably, uses electronically damped roll bars - as you have suggested.

The wallowing is very slight bit I will sort it so I will have to investigate further!


I will also check to see if the tow bar mounting frame is present, (my last RR had the Witter removable tow bar - which caused me no issues), and I was aware that the BCU, (if still called that), needs to be reprogrammed to turn off the rear parking sensors when towing.

I am now on day 8 of RRS ownership and so far so good - famous last words!

I have driven about 500 miles without issue during the past week.

I have read a number of errors with my iCarsoft v2.0 Multi Vehicle Scanner all of which, (bar one), causes me no concerns: -

1. B1A85 Ambient Light Sensor.
2. B1B44 Rear Right Outer Sensor.
3. B10AD Rain Sensor.
4. B11A5 Band 3 Antenna.

But I am a little concerned about: -

P0A14 Engine Mount Control Circuit Open.

Which I am assuming is that the ODB can't communicate to the engine ECU - just hoping that this is not a cause for concern?

The engine and gearbox ard running fine and I am currently getting just under 30 mpg - but sure I got just s little more from my 2007 RR with the same TDV8 engine.

So the adventure continues!

That would be the absolute pinnacle of vehicle stability control and comfort - actively damping out the vibration and torque reaction created by the TDV8 engine!

Does your car have active engine mounts, hence the code?
