Another diff lock question

Evening all, before I even attempt to free off the diff lock lever on my 54 plate Landmark I thought I would check to see whether I actually have it.

I have looked at loads of threads on here and have noticed that on vehicles without diff lock the range selector lever appears to sit in the centre.

Mine sits hard over to the right which looks the same as the lever on the Ashcroft kit - does that mean I probably do have diff lock?

I have tried to push the lever across to the left and it will not budge.

Correct, if if sits in the middle NO CDL, if it sits to the RHS then you have CDL.

Get underneath it and give the spigot on top of the transfer box a good soaking with WD40 or the likes and leave it to soak in then try again :)
 
for the unlocked position the lever must be at the middle, so if you can select HI/LOW now without the warning on the dash there are more problems there, or the lever is dislodged and you dont even have CDL
 
Back to the first question.

A D2 with a factory fitted Centre Diff Lock (CDL) lever should have a sticker just in front of the lever showing how to use it, H, N, L and Diff lock

The earlier D2's that I have seen just had a sticker showing Hi and Low.
 
...and there are some with the sticker and without CDL too;)...yes your lever seems like on the unlocked diff position(a bit missaligned to the right though), it must go left from HI or LOW to lock the diff, try to do that while slowly moving, you really have to crawl under and touch toward the front top of the transfer box to see if the spigot with the cable is there or not, and if it is it means the mechanism is stuck, it used to do that if it wasnt used for a long time
 
Thanks, picture really helps as that is exactly the angle of my lever and I have the same sticker.

Wish I had the cigar lighter too rather than just the socket which lets a lot of light out at night. Bought a new one from Rimmers but it was too big to fit the socket and I couldn't be bothered to change the whole thing.

My 2003 disco was the same ie lever stuck in un-locked position and high range (guessing the last owners didn't need a diff lock for the school run)
Had to get under it and free it all off at the transfer box
But even after freeing it off it needed adjusting because it would select the diff lock so the light comes on but it didn't lock the diff
But if I'm honest the traction control is so good you don't need the diff lock
 
The correct sticker is no indication that the cdl lever is fitted.
If the diff lock " gate " is embossed on the top of the gear knob then there is a good chance ut is.

I'm fairly sure that the label is a standard fitting, whether or not it has CDL installed.

I don't have that sticker in my 2003. Neither do I have the t-box internals, darnit.

Do you know how many owners do not understand that?

At the Peterborough show I was told I should drive the course with the Diff Lock on. I kept quiet and just let the traction control do its job.

Much better control if you only brake the wheel that is spinning. I struggle to think of a scenario where the diff lock would give an additional advantage. Perhaps going down a steep slope?

I am still glad I have one and I wiggle it from time to time to make sure it is free, even if I never have reason to use it :confused:

I might do a bit more research and post some notes about that on my blog.
 
it's good to have the diff'lock anyway...cos when you are in the middle of some deep mud, crossed axles or something the TC can fail on you due to a ABS system fault, SVS or sensor failure while the mechanical diff'lock is more reliable, also what ever the TC does it doesnt lock the two propshafts to turn together, it just applies brake on spinning wheels... the best is to have them both in action on rough terrain...happened to me not once to get stuck in mud no matter what the TC did but when i locked the diff i went out without trouble
