Hi I took a risk at the weekend and purchased a disco 300 tdi. The risk being after looking around for ages I got offered a reasonable condition one for a price I couldn't refuse, the problem being the clutch had gone.

The guy told me he believed it to be the clutch fork so i did abit of research and found it's a common problem so went ahead with the purchase (I know risky as I haven't got a clue whether the box is ok etc).

When I got it home tried to bleed the clutch ( just incase) the pedal was solid until we cracked the bleed nipple then is dropped straight to the floor and could only be operated by pull in it up and down. Strange but order a clutch and hd clutch fork.

So today was the day of the clutch change, got a brilliant guide of the net not sure which forum as there's so many. Got into the box and indeed the rod had poked straight through the clutch fork. I thought brilliant got it all back together and this is when the problems start.

Got everything back together and went to bleed the clutch up. The pedal dropped straight to floor again so tried it for a while to no avail. Spoke to someone that said there a real pain to bleed and it could take some time so carried on bleeding using the 2 person method, one operates the bleed valve one operates the clutch. No difference. Someone mentioned to put a piece of pipe onto the bleed nipple attach it high up and crack the bleed nipple so that all the air comes out and eventually the pipe will fill with fluid, shut the valve off and i should have a clutch. ( he said should take a couple of hours) so i left it and nothing.

So i was hoping that someone could advise me, im worried that either the master or slave cyclinder are gone, if so how to i check. Or should i just persevere with bleeding and at some point i might actually get abit of a clutch pedal back. Ireally sorry this has been so long winded but i know what. It's like on forums trying to understand what people are saying etc. So if you pve made it this far thanks a lot and hopefully you can help me lol

undo pipe from master cylinder and get some one to press pedal down hold finger over hole and let pedal up repeat until fluid comes out with some force if it doesnt or there is splashing in reservoir while pedal been pressed new master cylinder, master cylinder wont pull fluid from res if alot of air in pipe work ,slave will need changing anyhow i would have thought

Hi checked the master how you said and after a few pumps fluid squished out, so that's ok?

Why would you think of changing the slave syphilis i have done this with the new clutch as a rule? Cheers for your help mspate

That could have been me writing that post 2 weeks ago. New fork fitted went to bleed clutch absolutely nothing, even tried reverse bleeding and after the inital press of the pedal not even a drip of fluid would come out, never seen this after 30 years of working on land rovers. After 2 days of frustration this is what worked for me:- went and bought seal repair kits for master and slave (£10 the pair) and also one of the gunson eezibleed kits (£20) as mentioned on this forum and it all bled up straight away. Still don't know which part actually fixed it but at least it's working now.

Syphilis! Sorry about that it's this bloody iPad. It changes what I'm saying all the time!
Cheers for all your help guys I think I'm going to get the seal kits and crack on with that. I will update later cheers

Hi just for future reference if anyone is searching, i recieved the right seal kit today from rimmer bros, very pleased with them for sorting the problem and getting it straight out to me again, fitted the seal kit. Still didnt have a clutch. Started bleeing it up and it was pushing alot of air out and was not sucking air back anymore. After about 45 mins of bleeding the slave and the master we still didnt have a good clutch. Then we locked all the bleed nipples up and pumped the peddle we realised there was bubbles appearing in the reservoir so we kept pumpimg and pumping. And then pumped some more. After a while the peddle was spot on. Finally got to drive it down the road. The perseverance of mainly my dad had paid off and i now have a clutch. And my risk buying the disco in the first place also paid off, bit stiff chaning the transfer box diff lock etc and a slight noise going into 2nd gear if you change to quickly and its totaly different to driving my car or van but im happy with it so far so Thanks for all your help
