my rear winch didn't work too well it was very very painfully slow and the live feeds to the motor would get hot and smoke

so I fitted another motor today and its exactly the same,theres a brand new solenoid on there,and the earth and live feed go bk directly to the battery,but its still slow and wires get hot and smoke

any ideas?
 
the cable was over spec in the 1st place as we knew it was a longer run my mates a lectrician so he worked it all out
what size cable is it? what hp motor?
Ive got a 6.8hp bow2 motor on mine and wired it in 70mm2 cable, it used to run fine on 35mm2 but i ran it 24v then so less current, with the new motor it did the same.
The only other thing to check it that the winch brake isnt stuck
 
The only reason that cable gets hot is because it's carrying too much current. So, either the cable is too small for the current draw of the motor, or there's a short somewhere.

its only a 13000lb winch on the rear nothing special

Did ya up the earth cable anorl that or ****e earth connection??
both cables are 50mm2 and both go direct to the battery

If the wire is getting hot then it is only because more current than it can handle is being drawn through it.

I presume the winch has a fuse somewhere so it protects/doesn't burn the internal windings ?

I have some very sexy 70mm2, 600Amp cable that probably won't get hot .... it's expensive stuff mind you.
 
may sound like a daft question but do the cables get hot when winching out? you could be runing the motor the wrong way round, ie when winching in you could also be fighting the winch brake as well as the weight of the vehicle? I asume it only gets hot under load?

have never had a fuse on any winch a cut off switch is sufficient..
the 8274 winch on the front with bow 2 motor is fine on the same cable that is on the bk winch

vehicle is stationary..not under load winch does the same whichever way you winch in/out both ways get hot
 
can you take the motor off the winch and try it alone if it still does the same it is the motor if not then something is stuck in the winch gearbox. What make of winch is it?
its the 2nd motor ive tried on the winch both perform the same..belive me the amount of times ive had the tray in and out of the bk I aint in no hurry to remove it and refit it again,its a bastid to lift up into place and bolt up.

i doubt 2 motors would be equally knakered, it sounds like something fouling in the winch, unless for some reason the wiring between the solenoid and the winch is not correct for some reason, that could have an affect
