evening folks.. the ribbed belt than runs along the power steering/ aircon etc has develop an annoying constant squeak that is there on idle and right through the rev range. I initially tried some belt dressing which instantly silences the noise however after a few seconds the noise is back. The belt seems reasonably tensioned however it prob could be slightly tighter, is it an auto tensioner and if so are they straight forward to fit or is there another cause?

Ps the noise comes from the lower pulley area directly in front of the block.

Thoughts?

Yes , it is an auto tensioner.

If it is the lower pulley , then do you mean the crank pulley?

This has a dampener and are known to fail. Suggest you have a look at it and see if it is wobbly? loose.

I'm going to look this evening however he states in the guide that his only squeaked on start up or when switching off.. my noise is constant and gets faster and slower and with engine speed.

Fingers crossed it will be apparent once I've removed the cowling etc
 
you could try taking your belt off and give the pulleys a good clean with brake cleaner and brush in the grooves do all puleys
 
Pull the belt and spin the different driven items. TD5's have the vacuum pump on the alternator.

The bearings can be renewed if you have the earlier cast iron idler pulleys.

Had a spanner on the tensioner tonight and it's very weak offering little resistance and I am pretty sure it's the original one so it's covered 176k miles..

Suggestions for replacement part brand?
 
I thought the OP was asking about a replacement tensioner.

Do Dayco make tensioners?

Although it is obviously good practice to replace the belt as well. Something I would do as a matter of course with a good quality part as you say by Dayco / Gates.

Main thing with the D2 is to get the correct belt length for the vehicle spec. Plus the OP has not specified as far as II can see if it is a TD5 or V8.

That does not take into account IF he has had the ACE removed....if it was ever fitted......:rolleyes:.....as a VIN number check would obviously on show this.

I was after a new tensioner and a new belt too. Yes it's a TD5 and it did have ace and although disconnected the pump is still in situ. Also has Aircon (doesn't work tho ) there are plenty of suppliers of tensioners on eBay however is there a brand of tensioner i should be looking at apart from OE?

Dayco are probably the worlds largest supplier of tensioners and pulleys for car and truck engines.

You'll find them everywhere, even our Mercedes OM904LA engine (think of a four-cylinder TD5 but 4.25 litre and no timing chains) has a Dayco tensioner as original fitment.

Dayco APV2985 is the one for the TD5, the V8 is different: APV1014

if the ace is disconected, and pump still in situe, then could be the pump dying due to lack of lube, you can get a kit to remove the pump..

A very good point, if it does run dry it could seize in which case your belt will snap and your water pump will not be running..!!. Unless the pump has a closed circuit of fluid going through it.
