...how much does it cost you to do 100 miles? In your...

1) DSE (remapped or otherwise)?
2) V8 - 4.0 or 4.6?
3) LPG - 4.0 or 4.6?

I am intrigued which is the best balance of power/economy/cost, what with the massive increase in fuel costs recently. Obviously the standard V8 cars will give the worst cost figures, but I am interested to see how much cheaper an LPG kit makes them! If I get a P38, it'd either be a DSE or an LPG-coverted V8, and this will help me decide which.

Come on Data put new batteries in your calculator. Don't know how much diesel is in francland. But over here it's around £5.90 to £6.00 a gallon. So at 28 mpg which you claim now and again it would cost at least £21.00 to do a 100 miles. At my usual 20 mpg it would be around £30.00. Unless you drive constantly down a 100 mile long hill.:D:D:D

Mike don't think you have a choice to make. It has to be the diesel every time. There is no comparison to make they beat the V8s uphill and down dale for running costs. Plus you can use 2500 litres of home brew in them a year without paying tax if you want to go to that length.
 
I've had a chipped diesel and an lpg range rover. My diesel would average 19. My lpg 4.6 averages 14 which includes petrol for starting etc. I pay 71p a litre for gas. Would I ever have another diesel p38 ? No. It was slow even tho chipped borderline dangerous when pulling out from a halt into fast traffic.
It was an auto so I can't comment on a manual. Hope this helps

Your diesel was knacked, try keeping up with my chipped DSE in your V8. Ok you may just have the edge but not by very much.

Sorry but it wasn't. It was slow on pull away. So were 3 other "chipped flyer's" I compared it with I'm not interested in speed otherwise I would still have my integrale.

Brain fade I normally work on litres per 100 kilometres:eek::eek::eek: Long term average is 24mpg, paying about £5 per gallon so as you say about £21. I can dream of the days as a lad when £1 bought me 5 gallons rather than £5 buying 1 gallon:mad:

You and me both mate. ESSO golden 5 star rocket fuel. 3/9 a gallon. That's if i remember my L.S.D correctly 18/9 for five gallons. And 1/3 to spend in shop. Or buy a pint with if you drank mild. I was stood at pump the other day being relieved of £50.00. Never thought i'd see the day when the pounds went up quicker than the gallons, let alone the bloody litres.:mad::mad::mad:

Mine is not slow away at all. I of course meant from a standing start. I am not really interested in speed either. But then again it just depends what you mean by pulling into fast traffic. Most people would wait for a reasonable gap. But mine gets away pretty sharpish. :):):)

It's hard to say the cost per 100 miles as petrol costs more in Diff areas.
However i drive a Full Fat 4.6(2001) and around the town only get 13-14mpg however on a run(keeping to 60-65mph) 25-26 is the norm ?
Best i have ever had was 27.4 over 122 miles mostly dual carriageway staffs to Anglesey... I dont drive hard but it does not make that much of a Diff as sometimes when you do boot her she still gives 23-24 :)

Thanks wammers. When you say home brew, I assume you mean veggie oil?

I always liked 6 cylinder BMW engines - what are the before and after figures for a remapped diesel P38?

Since taking off my PSI power box whilst investigating my gearbox problem, fuel consumption has increased from 24mpg long term with the box to 22mpg on the first tank with the the box removed:eek:
 
Hi,
from my experience with 4.6 P38's
it costs (@ 72p LPG), it works out at £20 per 100 miles (round town)
and about £17 per 100 miles on a run.

The big difference is when towing, my old P38 DSE did 18 - 20 mpg
when towing my twin axle caravan, and IMHO was hopeless at it.
I never worked out the cost per 100 miles with that.
But my 4.6 tows effortlessly and is far cheaper to run overall on LPG.

I have had one DSE, and 3 x 4.6's over the years and would never
go back to the oil burner in the P38.
 
My 4.6 is running single point lpg and around town i can get about 120 miles to 43lts of gas, on a run i can get 135/140 miles. That costs me around £35, as lpg is 80.9 per ltr here. Before i brought it i was looking at diesels but they where all high mileage,smelly,and over priced. Luckily i drove a v8 one as they are so much nicer to drive, quiet, smooth and the hse has all the toys, some of the dse,s dont have all the whistles and bells. V8 all the way mate!! :behindsofa:
 
I rekon mine does about £25 per 100 miles as a rule of thumb.
It's a DHSE with a power box, good all round grunt and not as slow as some people would have you believe... :D
 
My DSE with a power box averages about 20 mpg which works out as £29 per 100 miles, goes up to about 30 on a good run at 70.
all winter when towing a full twin axle trailer of Xmas trees all day every day in snow etc only dropped to about 17/18 .

Main problem with dizzle is setting off , and the turbo lag. Rarely get into 5th around the local roads as anything below 55 and turbo drops off. You learn to live with it tho. But would always go for diesel.
