alternator wiring

I have a 1977 range rover. I need to replace the alternator but the new terminals are different. There a re thee terminals on the back and i am stuck on two of them. I have a brown wire and a brown and yellow wire, anyone know which goes where. What happens if I put them on wrong way round (nothing ghood i don't expect!)
