alternator to battery connection - "quick fix"

Hi all,
I discovered a while back that my battery doesn't charge.
The alternator is putting out good voltage, but the wire going back to the battery has a reading of 0 volts when isolated, suggesting a break in the cable.
I've traced what i can see of the wire and can't see anything untoward.

As a fix, i've spliced in a direct wire from the alternator back to the battery and it's charging fine now.

I'm guessing there's a bad connection at the starter, stopping the alternator feed from getting back to the battery, although the starter works fine.

Splicing in the wire was a heck of a lot less work than gaining access to the starter...
Just wondering if this is OK to do electrically speaking - am I setting myself up for any trouble?! Obviously if theres a bare wire or connector adrift near the starter this is a risk... (and i probably should take a look for that reason alone) but other than that?
