Alternator saw bench.

Maybe not strictly a series thread but it'd be going on one.
I saw a video on youtube where some geyser had made a motor out of a alternator.
This can be done using some electronic dooferknackers and thats not so hard to do, however I was thinking I could do this a simpler way.
An alty is 3 phase, so would need 3 phase to operate as a motor, so rather than mess wiith high current mosfets I was thinking tap into the vehicles own alty on the 3 seperate phases, and connect these directly to the 3 phases of the alty used as a motor on the sawbench, and connect the field windings of the sawbench alty direct to the vehicles 12v battery to create a constant full field, then the sawbench motor/alty in theory would track the speed of the vehicle alty, and this wouldnt need any electronics just a few wiring connections.
Anyone seen or done owt like this.

Gyro Gearloose, could possibly work, but what are you trying to achieve??
how much energy is gonna be wasted, best get a chain saw.

just get a good motor from the scrappy

I keep looking on eblag fer a decent mini diesel engine, there not all that common, I'm not over keen on a petty.
I liked the alty idea, opens up a cheap way of driving stuff, compressors, saw's, concrete mixers and crap.

Some slack jawed yokel beat me to it.
He's not maling sense by saying he can drive another alty of it and make more power, but the fact remains the idea works, you can drive one alty off another.
The guys original alty was running the 'motor' and still charging his battery as well.

Buy a table saw, the alternator was never meant to cut wood and I doubt it would ever have enough power to do a job for you, and the energy used would never be replaced with the normal charging system, it would flatten the battery jig time and probably kill it and all your electrics, and you when the blade comes winging off coz it dunt fit properly

If you were stuck on a desert island and needed to build a boat then perhaps.

I was looking for reasons why it would work rather than why not.
Cabby I agree I have a sander thats powered by a washer motor, bit of a bugger sorting out all dem wires though.
Theres a couple of guys on the net gettin 30mph out of push hogs powered by a modded altys of batteries, so I'm sure they'd have the balls to cut wood.

we use decent single phase motors to run feed tracks low speed high torque motors if you were to gear them up with a belt you could run a table saw...... also they use large single phase motors to run 24 and 48 inch fans for ventilation but these are high speed low torque direct drive
