Is it possible to bench test an alternator?

I know you can test the diode pack using a multi meter.

I've got an old one kicking around and could do with testing it before fitting.
 
I didn't think you could without spinning it up tbh.

That might put an end to my bench test. Why is that?

They need a power source before they will work, they are not self exciting. So they need to be connected up as they would be in the vehicle. You would need a pretty fast drill to get anything out of one. They run several times faster than the engine turns.
