Alternator bench test

Is it possible to bench test an alternator?

I know you can test the diode pack using a multi meter.

I've got an old one kicking around and could do with testing it before fitting.

Here in the US just about every parts store can.

I was thinking of trying to make some kind of drill attachment? And spin it up that way?

Needs to be connected up properly to a power source never spin an alternator that is disconnected.

They need a power source before they will work, they are not self exciting. So they need to be connected up as they would be in the vehicle. You would need a pretty fast drill to get anything out of one. They run several times faster than the engine turns.
