Alternatives to Avon Rangemasters 7.5R16

Just got a 1988 110 Hardtop.

My front two tyres are OK - Avon Rangemaster 7.5R16 8 ply (112/110)
Two rear tyres are Avon Rangemaster 6 ply (108/106), one is new, one is very nearly out.
The spare is probably illegal.

So I need a replacement tyre soon.

I am either looking for a decent priced 7.5R16 Rangemaster to put on the spare and swap with the duff rear or some find some alternatives.

Am I right in saying that the equivalent metric size for 7.5R16's are 235R85's?

What are my alternatives? I will mostly be on road. Original steel rims. Not looking for alloys or to spend much. Will even contemplate 2nd hand or maybe a metric matched pair? Have seen some 205/80R16 rangemasters on ebay (prohibative postage) but if I bought a pair my calculations show that they will be quite different in size to the 7.5's. Would this be a problem - mixing sizes or gear ratios - transfer box says 1.667 ratio? Can my steel rims take tubeless tyres?

If you want to change all the tyres I can recommend Colway AT 235/85R16 remould tyres. They are a bit wider and very slightly taller than the rangemasters but you can buy two for the cost of a non-remould tyre. Good on the road and better off road than the rangemasters.

The steel rims can take tubeless tyres unless they are riveted.

Don't mix 205 with 7.50.
 
Hi,

I've got 7.50 16 Goodyear G90s on my 90. They are great on and off road. They are used on Military and are not noisy like the earlier tyres used, plus they are not expensive!

They loook OK on steel rims and fill the arches.

Ian, How do you find the steering on your 110. I had a set of these tyres on a Series 11a, and the steering on that was dire. When eventually got my 90 tried these tyres on it. Guess what - discovered it was the tyres. Now run on G90's on tubeless wolf rims - rims came from Jim down at Gigglepin.com . Great cornering, not the best for mud-plugging or wet grass, but no inner tubes so don't care. Last set were Greenway anaconda's, on Classic RR steel rims - tubed - had 3 flats on way to and in Wales last Easter. Quickfit won't touch tubes - well not in Wales anyway. Friend of mine with 110 from South London and Surrey Club runs Michelins xzl he loves them (if you can find them) He uses his for gardening work all over London, whilst others swear by BF Goodrich A/T for all terrain - can get very high mileage from these- 40,000 miles, or M/T for off roading. BTW Greenway tyres are about £50 a corner, just get some tubeless rims - ask the dealer for the part number,(check your current ones too) I did - then got them somewhere else. But expect about 10,000 miles a set. BTW make sure you get them fitted properly. Possible cause of tubed punctures according to gigglepin.com 205/16 are the smaller tyres they used to fit to 90's. 750/16 available from Greenway, Goodyear (g90) etc. Cheers Peter
 
I have not had my 110 long enough to say. I had a 125 trip when I picked it up - dire weather and down the M3 which is riddled with tramlines - nearly had to change my trousers when I got home when on two occasions I lurched suddenly to one side - probably the tramlines in conjunction with strong winds and passing traffic.

A subsequent trip proved better - I think I was learning to steer before I came across the corner. Since then, its been off the road.

After a trip to my local Landrover dealer for some advice, I think I will probably go for a replacement 6 ply Avon Rangemaster to match the new spare that I put on the rear. Bit I will swap the 6 ply's to the front, giving me part used 8 ply's on the rear and new 6 ply's on the front. Apparently this will be the best combination. The tyre guy at the dealership siad that this would be better than having 8 ply's on the front. He also stressed how important it is to have similar tread depths on the same axle.

I know that this option is not the cheapest long term solution, but I don't think that I can afford to change all the corners at once. Maybe when business has picked up, I can flog the nearly news on ebay and put the money towards something better suited to more modern road driving - if I find that I need to chnge at all. Most of my driving will be round and about home lugging rubbish/tools around.
 
Thanks - my bidding strategy was a little wrong - did not have the bottle to hold out till the last few seconds otherwise I may have just got in there with no time for the buyer to retalliate.
 
Ian - if you end up moving to Radials I'd be very interested in the 7.50R16 6-ply newish Rangemaster you'd end up with spare, and I work in Surrey (Camberley).
 
Cheers for the offer Steve ... however it's particularly one (or two so I can have a spare!) Rangemaster 7.50R16 6PR I'm after to turn my current Landy Trike into a Quad. Well, to complete the set of tyres anyway!
 
What about a pair of 7.50R16 108/106 N Colway AT ? £49 + reasonable P&P. I would not have to worry about having to change all corners at once like I would have to if I went to a different size.

Do these need tubes? I think my current Rangemasters are tubed.

Any suggestions on fitting? Local ATS reconed that they would fit a customer supplied tyre for about £8 but I recon that the moment they found something was not quite standard (ie tubes, tubed->tubeless or size) then they would revoke the deal or up the price mid fitting.

I would'nt bother going to ATS to have tubes fitted, they will fit them incorrectly and you'll end up with punctures. Do yourself a big favour and get them fitted by a specialist such as AJS's in surrey:

Went in ATS on way to Wales last easter for a tubed tyre repair, and the youngster who fitted it did not have a clue - hmmm too tricky. Anyway tyre blew later on same day.
 
I have decided on replacing all my tyres with 235/85-16 Colway ATs so I have 1 Rangemaster (108 I think) in very good/almost new condition plus two others (110 I think) with some life left.

If anyone is interested. I was thinking of about £25 ONO for the nearly new. The two other tyres I would let go for free.

I am in West Molesey, Surrey (KT8).

I am getting the tyres fitted this Friday morning so need a quick decision on the used pair. If I do not hear from anyone about the used pair I will let them go due to lack of storage but will keep the nearly new.

I can supply photos of the tyres if anyone would like.

I have given first refusal to TheSmith88 otherwise they are all up for grabs.

Thanks for the tyre - absolutely excellent, hope the S3 seat base is of use in your other quest.
