I'd like to start a list of parts from other manufacturers that fit the freelander. As everyone knows sometimes parts from other motors are cheaper, and easier to get from a decent scrappies. Especially if you'd rather crack out the socket set, get some rust in your eyes and feel like MAN!!!!! ( Or butch vagina person).
Than get ripped off at your garage of choice.

I believe that most parts suppliers will give you the choice of parts from alternative suppliers, e.g. all makes, bearmach, brit part and so on. Is that what you mean?

I'm unsure if a cross reference list is available - others on here may know about that.

The FL1 with the K1.8, KV6 and the L series diesel can use engine parts from other parts suppliers, e.g.: Discount MG Rover Spares [DMGRS.co.uk] Rimmer Bro's and so on.

Think he means other Manufactures i.e face-lift fog lights are the same as Ford Mondeo 03 -05. Cheaper than the Land Rover ones even used
 
I use to have a tvr chimaera, which used parts from tons of different cars. Getting parts was pretty easy, so fault finding/servicing/modifications become much cheaper. Had that car for years, until I went involuntary offroading.

So got a freelander hahah
 
Does anyone know if the front lights on a 2000 MY01 Freelander (with the clear indicator lens) are a straight swap for ones on my '98 (with the yellow indicator lens)?

The contact for the bulb holder burnt out. I 'filled' it with solder and it has (amazingly) worked well for almost 3 years like that - but its gone again. So I'm looking to swap the lights over from my 2000 car.

This was taken in May 2014...

Yes GG. They are a straight swap and a common mod here, along with the other orange lights too. ;)
 
Screw fit gear knobs from MG & Rover fit Facelift Freelanders. Had them on both my 2005 Freelanders.
 
Use Delphi brake pads instead of LR boxed pads. The Delphi are an OE supplier and are half the cost of LR pads. I use them without exception and have good brakes as a result.

Being a mid-90s Land Rover, there is a great deal of carryover from the rest of the Rover Group (and later, MG Rover Group) vehicles. The indicator and light column switches are shared with the Rover 600 and 800 for example. L-series and K-series are staple on the whole MG Rover range of vehicles. But I guess you knew that already...

I'd imagine that Bosch parts are going to be common with many vehicles. Perhaps that also applies to ABS wheel sensors too?

Delphi were a Rover group preferred supplier. They made everything to Rover's specifications. Shocks, ball joints, wishbones, braking components and more. Look at the name on the shocker label. You'll see it says Delphi;)

Makes it a little easier to find genuine parts without having to go through a third party doesn't it? :)
 
The door actuators are the same as the Mini Cooper.
V6 crank and cam sensor are compatible and fit BMW parts.

The NAS V6 MAF sensor is also compatible with BMW

Front brakes sliding pins and bolts are compatible with Pontiac Aztec

Coolant expensive tank cap is compatible with 2001 Ford Crown Victoria.

If this threat gets sticky I will update with part numbers.
 
In the spirit of this thread, (getting bits cheaper) I need two new front wishbones (or lower suspension arms) and was wondering how the cheaper makes fare. Eurocarparts are selling Starline branded items for around £45 each but there are lots of suppliers selling them for as low as £20.
Anyone have any experience of the Eurocarparts ones? Are they twice as good as the cheapest but half as good as Delphi? Maybe it doesn't work that way.

In my experience. The £20 eBay lower wishbones suffer early ball joint wear. A Delphi ball joint might last 100K miles. The cheap ball joint might only last 25K miles. I find the dust covers split in a couple of years. Otherwise there seems to be little difference in the actual metal part of the wishbone. Obviously ball joints are available later on, should they fail.
I'm just about to fit some cheap wishbones to the mother in law's V6. The factory wishbone ball joint covers have finally split after 16 years!!

Thanks Nodge, That is what I was hoping to hear. The car will be doing a low mileage so 25k will probably last it out, no point in spending more on the Delphi ones.
When you're looking for aftermarket parts it's hard to know if they're a bit more expensive because they're better or because the seller is chancing his/her arm.
