hi all, been looking at some new AT style tires.. but i have 18" alloys on at the mo.. and the range of tyres are both quite expensive, and limited in off road style at this size..
i have found a company online that does steel wheel packages wight 16" off road tyres and which is about £100 more than getting just tyres for the 18"

so i could have a set to swap for winter and when the fields are muddy ( i clay shoot) and keep the alloys for summer when the fields are dry etc...

any thoughts ? anyone done this ? how do the black steels look ? i have the dark blue P38 and think they might look quite mean tbh..

any technical issues ? they are 255 65 16 on the steel rims

currently on 255 55 18

thanks as ever

charlie

Those modular 16 inch rims are in common use on just about all Land Rovers - my brother has a set on his series fitted with muds. I don't see there being a problem.

just the guy selling them weren't sure they were a straight fit without spacers or rubbing issues...
and obviously are a different size from what i have at the mo...

There are differences between the Disco and Defender wheels. The Rangie ones have larger wheel nuts (and hence the recess for them) and also a lip so the wheel hangs nicely without nuts. Also, the distance from the hub is sometimes different so, yes, spacers might be necessary.

16" ones are rarer but turn up and are better (IMHO) for ride quality, although the steering is ever so slightly less positive. I'd also suggest trying 235 instead of 255 unless you do a lot of motorway type driving. Easier round town.

You can get original P38 wheels off Fleabay. Patience is a virtue! You won't have to wait long.

hi guys, thanks for the input... as recommended by Grrrr i've gone for some 235 black steel and some Insa Dakar rubber... i only potter around the villages and clay shoot on the weekend so no motorway millage... then will fit the alloys and road tyres back for the summer
