Freelander 1 All Terrain Tyres

Hello All.

Currently mulling over doing a 40mm lift on my facelift TD4. I have 16 inch Freelander 1 alloys alloys and wonder if I can fit the following tyres to them.. and if so would I need spacers to clear the suspension and bodywork etc. All just theory at the moment but I have a firm offer on brand new IMSA RANGER 215/65 R16 at a low price. They were originally bought to fit to a VW Caddy camper van.. a completely inappropriate combination(no mods done etc) so have been fitted but never used.

Any advice would be much appreciated

P.S. Just thinking.. my alloys may be 225’s wide?

It’s worth understanding how the suspension and steering work. This will enable you to answer your own questions pretty much.

A lift also may not really allow bigger tyres. Depends how you lift the vehicle (there are multiple ways).

Our Freelander is 100% stock suspension wise and I’m running 205 x 16’s. We also have mud flaps fitted. Thus far no rubbing on or off road. Very pleased with the setup.

The tyres you are looking at are a little fatter and quite a lot shorter (1.9”).

In fact they must be close to factory size if not indeed a factory size? In which case, yes of course they will fit.

If you plan to off road the increased clearance of a taller tyre is a benefit IMO as the Freelander has limited clearance.

Thanks for the advice. I live in the sticks but serious off-roading isn’t planned as such at least for the time being. It’s more for practical purposes as the tyres I have at the moment (Khumo) are excellent road tyres but have struggled on our track in snow and when very muddy. Along with pot holes/deep water/puddles I think it would be a better option to have all terrains. Will keep you posted (and everyone else I guess to the outcome) at the moment rebuilding the IRD and then getting a recon’d VCU

This is interesting, was about to ask something similar before I found this.

So I need some new tyres and wondered if I could get a slightly bigger tyre that looks visually smarter as well as gives it a slight lift. Thinking a slightly chunky tread to make it look beefier.

I've got these wheels with crappy tyres - they're ok on road but I don't like how they look.

The stock tyre size is 225/55r17 and to be honest there's not a great deal of options for this width on 17" rims that are a good fit. Happy to spend a bit more then usual but don't want to chuck crazy money at them.

The best option I've found that I think would work is the Toyo Open Country 225/65R17 which would fit, and also increase the tyre radius by 22.5mm. Visually it looks like there's enough clearance for the extra height, even at full lock both ways.

However wanted to reach out for any advice or experience from anyone that's tried anything like this?

@300bhp/ton, do you know if the tyre wall is higher on your tyres then the stock tyre and do you know by how much?

I’m running Geolander AO15 on 225 65 17. Stock suspension etc. and no issues with clearance. I think they are a decent AT tyre and have had no issues with them. My use on my F1 is 80% on road, 20% off road/farmland/green lane. Not yet had chance to test them in snow.

You'll have no trouble in snow, they're snow rated tyres, which do exactly what it says on the tin.
My preferred tyres for Freelander's is the factory Goodyear Wrangler HP AW or the Yokohama Geolander 015, both very capable in all conditions.
